Finest Dearest are coming back to the east coast! This is their first trip across the country since their first trip across the country in April '08. While they were in town I saw them play @ Trash and even though the show was somewhat sabotaged by a dreadful sound dude, they kicked ass. I usually try to avoid going to shows the night before Siren, but not this time. If you haven't been to Dead Herring yet, it's just some folks' apartment. Even though that may sound potentially disastrous, the sound there is actually not that bad.

Wish they swapped FOTL and Micachu. Otherwise, no other complaints. Good to see that the stages are staying in the same place, wasn't sure what was going to happen with that.

travels are coming back for their second ever NYC show! Union Hall, Sat Feb 21. Playing with Get Him Eat Him and Kleenex Girl Wonder. Excellent lineup. travels were one of my TOP priorities for CMJ '08. I saw them at Bell House and loved them. Hopefully this is the beginning of many more NYC shows as they promote their new album, The Hot Summer, which I have been listening to a lot. Fans of their first album and of their previous bands, especially Metal Hearts, will be pleased. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Some exciting news, well, exciting to me at least. Even though I am barely keeping this blog alive, I am also now a contributor to the Fine Fine Music Blog. If you are unfamiliar with Fine Fine, it is a Dutch mp3 blog with a focus on Dutch music, but also posts music from all over as well. I am joining up with Fine Fine in order to bring in some New York flavor. My first post for Fine Fine featured a song from The Antlers' brand new album, Hospice. I'm still trying to get the hang of things over at Fine Fine, but I have a lot of music that I plan to bring there. I just bought my tix for Saturday. Was a tough debate. Do you go to the first Futurity show ever? Or do you let them work out the last few kinks on Friday and go to the weekend show instead. The album will be released in April on Monotreme Records worldwide(except for Japan,info on this will soon be announced). First, random friend request from Skilf. Similar to his fellow british hip hop brethren, this guy is also quite good. Although, surely he gets a ton of The Streets comparisons/rip-off accusations.

Naked Hearts. Sound a lot like travels/Metal Hearts. Saw these guys open for The Secret Life Of Sofia @ Union Hall this past Sat. Was very impressed. They are playing with The Loom and past KOers The Party Faithful (former Lolita Bras) and Bridges and Powerlines @ Delancey on Dec 6. Check them out, you won't regret it.

ps - TSLOS were great too, as usual, but I wish they played for a little longer.

quiet Loudly. Good use of capitalization. These guys are playing with The Antlers & Pet Ghost Project (Who I have been meaning to post about FOREVER and finally have, sort of) at Public Assembly on Jan 15. Their "sounds like" describes them well:

if Slowdive, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mogwai, The Beach Boys, Radiohead, and The Constantines were all swallowed whole by three gigantic psychedelic robots from the future and told to kick out the jams, motherfucker.

I would have posted a pic of them too, but I couldn't find any decent shots.

Been listening to these guys a lot today. They remind me of one of my favs - Aeroplane Pageant. Same smoothed out Clashy kind of pop. Three Brooklyn shows coming up, all with Tijuana, including one with PastKOers Cinema, Cinema @ Matchless on the 20th and one @ Public Assembly on Dec 3.

Sidenote - Bravo and job well done to the new owners of Public Assembly for the long over due renovation to the greatly improved back room. Boycott over.

Show one of the Born Ruffians trifecta is in the books. According to the band, who said this many times throughout, it was their "best NYC show ever." Clearly the Vampire Weekend set is starting to catch on to this band, because the place was packed with the same sort of singalong to every song crowd that go to all of their shows, which is not a bad thing. In fact, it probably means that these guys are on the cusp of a major breakout. Good for them. Also, the fille to garcon ratio was very favorable. Reminded me of a road trip to Geneseo, if you know what I mean.

I should probably end my pursuit of the trifecta, because it will be hard to top last night's show, but they did not play Piecing It Together, the song with my favorite guitar riff of '06, so I will forge on!

BTW - I swear that Square Wave Sean moonlights as the bass player for the Ruffians. Either that or dude is his fucking doppelganger.

AND - Plants and Animals were also VERY VERY VERY GOOD. And I wussed out again. Was going to yell out "Where's Meg?", but didn't. Pathetic.

If you haven't been following along over @ Bumpershine, here's how my CMJ went:

Wed:

CMJ finally begins for me around 10:00pm. HURRAY!

See at least one song by - Bad Veins, The Lisps, Motel Motel, My Teenage Stride, A Sunny Day In Glasgow (very good), Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Crystal Antlers (didn’t like them as much as I thought I would), The Muggabears (love love love), and Juvelen (out of control). I might have seen Heloise and Ringo too.

Then there was a crazy car ride over to Ludlow, and a random stop at Cake Shop for The Browns and The Muslims. I immediately understood why The Muslims are playing every show @ CMJ.

Thurs:

Pick up badge and then straight to Pianos. Saw some of Sebastian G (Ehh). Loved Wye Oak. Had dinner during Phosphorescent. Over to Fader for Tobacco (interesting), Friendly Fires (VERY GOOD), one song by Death Vessel and then off to The Annex. Little Boots TOOK FUCKING FOREVER to get set up, but when they finally started playing, I liked them. She’s no Katy Perry (swoon), but she’s also kinda sexy. First time seeing Passion Pit and I liked not loved them. Need to see them again I think. Then to Mercury for Pela who NEVER disappoint. I don’t get why they are not HUGE. Jukebox the Ghost were tight as a drum but looked tired. Woke up with one of their songs in my Friday morning (afternoon?). Get some rest boys, three more shows Friday. Then tried to get into HIFI (a line? really?) before going over to Studio where I saw that Japanese Motors guy hang from that sprinkler pipe. Would have been amazing if the pipe had broke. The End.

Fri:

Friday was as much about what didn't happen as what did happen. Started the day @ Bell House for travels first NYC show. They were excellent. Told me that Metal Hearts and Victory At Sea were officially dead and that travels will be back in town again soon. Also saw a little bit of Wild Sweet Orange. The little bit I saw was solid. Went to Lit to see Snowman, but I guess they weren't able to make the trip from Australia. Earlier in the day I found out that The Black and White Years had cancelled their trip from Austin to CMJ as well, so also didn't get to see them Friday. Went to Fader and saw a different Aussie band, The Seabellies, who were pretty good. Then School of Seven Bells came on and I think they were also good, but those two girls are way too distractingly beautiful. Heard one Phenominal Handclap Band song before heading to Acme for a delicious dinner. After dinner went downstairs for LoveLikeFire. They were so great. I'm jealous of San Fran folks that get to see them play with Finest Dearest all the time. They were the last band I saw for a while, because Mercury, Pianos, and Cake Shop all were not letting anyone else in. Prav texted me and told me to come to Irving Plaza, so I did and got there right in time for Late Of The Pier. I don't know how to describe them. Disco metal psyche rock? Wanted to see Soulwax, so I hung out while James LaVelle of Unkle djed for an hour. He was really good but I was too tired to enjoy it and ended up leaving before Soulwax.

Sat:

Saturday went much better, well except for our showcase being cancelled. I had been avoiding the bands that were playing our Sat showcase, so I was glad that was able to catch Ruby Suns @ Music Hall. They reminded me of a simplified Architecture in Helsinki. Ate a free hot dog and then went next door for Drink Up Buttercup. Great as usual. Went back to Music Hall for Monotonix and WTF. I think seeing Monotonix is like finding a used condom in your room. It's pretty foul but you know that something awesome happened. Then walked over to Glasslands for Moby Dick and The End of the World. Both were good. Ate dinner @ Papa Lima. Off to Fat Baby. Saw Real Ones (very fun) and FanFarlo (very good, if not just a little tooo much like Beirut, BSS, CYHSY, etc.). Then went to Mercury Lounge to see Wye Oak again. They have the honor of being the only band that I saw twice during CMJ and I wish I had seen them a hundred times. SOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOODDD. Then to Delancey for a nice set by the creators of my favorite album of '08, The Secret Life of Sofia. After them I teleported over to the Red Bull Space just in time for Delta Spirit and FREE!!!! Guinness. So, Trashcan is pretty much the song of '08, right? Then Scotty beamed me over to Rehab for The Coast, who were so great that I decided to end my CMJ after seeing them.

All in all another excellent CMJ experience. And even though I am still recoving:

Finally. travels will be playing their first NYC show! Lovebirds Anar (of Metal Hearts) and Mona (of Victory at Sea) will be @ the beautiful, classy, comfortable, brand new venue Bell House on Fri Oct 24. They are just one of many bands that will be appearing at the Bell House when Gothamist takes over the venue for the entire week of CMJ.

So far there have not been any CMJ sets that have popped out at me as "must attends". Except for this one. Therefore, I am filing this under HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

So here's what my listening pattern has been recently:

Something new (like Dear Science, Lunglight, In Ear Park, No Deliverance, Life Like, Animal, The Family Afloat), The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me (from here on referred to as TDAGARIM), something new, TDAGARIM, something new, TDAGARIM, something new...and the occasional Meadowlands thrown in for good measure.

It took quite a long time, but my opinion of TDAGARIM has grown from "eeehh, it's ok" to "desert island disc (download?)"

Speaking of Radiohead - Mexico dates have been confirmed for March. Who's going? I'm waiting to see how this plays out. See what other countries they will also be playing South of the Border. Or if they play Coachella '09 while continent hopping.

I really am. Tried to get up the nerve to yell out something witty @ Webster Hall last night, but I chickened out. I was thinking about going with "George Lucas" or "Indiana Jones". But no. Everybody else was doing it, so why not me? And there were plenty of opportunities to. Oh well.

Anyway, GREAT show last night. I have been listening to Fleet Foxes' Ragged Wood over and over and over and last night lived up to the hype. Great sound, except for during one of the songs where he played solo that the sound dude seemed to fall asleep. Cringe worthy. Was also VERY NICE to not have pounding house coming up from underneath for once. I would very much like to see these guys again soon, but I would GIVE ANYTHING to see Crystal Skulls again. Seriously guys. It's time to come back to NYC.

Ben Folds Five Reunion!!!!!!!

Ben Fold Five were one of the best bands that I have ever seen live. I missed the Dismemberment Plan reunion that happened a while back, because I was hoping that they would play a show in NYC, like Denali are, and I find myself regretting that decision quite often. I feel that if I don't go, I will regret missing this even more. Here's the info from the press release that just went out:

Piano-based rock trio Ben Folds Five formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1993. This is the band's first time back in NY since CMJ '05, when they played the Fader House with two then relatively unknown bands Wolfmother and Silversun Pickups, among others. And Army Navy were one of my favorites to play the Fader House that year.

NYC show to be announced next week

Hi folks,
We can't thank you enough for being such an amazing audience last weekend. It was truly a homecoming that far surpassed our expectations.

That said, we have a couple more surprises (and by surprises, we really just mean shows) to announce before we start playing around in the studio (and by playing around, I really do mean just playing around. It's about all we do when we get together these days). The first of the two will come this Monday when we announce a show in New York for early fall.

PLEASE NOTE: This will be the last East Coast show we intend to play this year, so we hope you can make it if you missed the reunion show.

The Best Thing I Have Witnessed...

I wasn't sure how good the show was going to be yesterday, because the last time I saw them was the Black Swan party, which was completely bonkers and exponentially smaller. Sometime bands, especially the openers, have a hard time bringing their show to the big stage, during the day, and with all the distractions of the pool. But silly me for ever doubting M&K.

Siren Fest '08 - The Plan

And the lineup this year is spectacular. Here's the plan:

Walk around/collect free shit during DofZ/TAP -> Parts & Labor -> close as possible for The Dodos!!!!!!! (I, along with pretty much everyone it seems, am OBSESSED with Visitor) -> maybe catch some of Annuals set (depends on whether or not the main stage has it's usual 1/2 hour delay or not) -> meal/beer -> Beach House -> Helio -> BSS

This plan would involve missing Ra Ra, Islands, and Malkmus. Oh well. We'll see what happens.

Yes. The Secret Life of Sofia. Saw them play a much too short set @ The Delancey recently and they were amazing/mesmerizing/sublime/very very impressive. And the band makes a strong case for why you should still buy cds with the intricate, beautiful artwork/packaging for the album. Add them to the flyer!

Future of the Left are coming back to the US. Finally. Right now this is at the top of my watch list. Highly anticipated. Details:

we will finally be touring your big.. BIG fucking country supporting our friends Against Me! starting at the end of September for approximately 4 weeks, dates are still being confirmed as we speak but we will keep you updated! We will hopefully be playing some of our own shows as well, but yet again this is to be confirmed.

I really hope that NYC gets a headlining show.

Anyone want to go with me down to Richmond on Saturday? Or should I just cross my fingers and wait for an NYC show?

Beat Radio are back on the scene. They have a show coming up @ Union Hall and there's a new song @ their Myspace.

Speaking of new songs @ their Myspace, both of the new songs @ Bound Stems' Myspace are KICK ASS. Seems like the new album is going to be just as great as their first. And their two NYC shows are coming up fast. Can't wait!

I was all pumped up to see Appomattox for the first time this weekend, but something happened last minute and they and Mussels got moved to Friday night instead of Saturday, and Friday was no good for me. Darn. Hopefully I can catch them @ the Annex on July 16. Really though, have you checked out their album yet? It is easily one of my favs of the year so far.

You guys have as much fun as I did @ the 2nd annual After The Jump Fest? It was one of the single best experiences of my life so far. Still can't believe that I made it home alive and in one piece. If you think that we went big this year, just wait until next year. CMJ watch out, planning has begun.

My favorite recent Myspace friend request? that's easy -> boy genius. I am such a sucker for that Pavement sound.

I am sure there is a lot more that I have been meaning to mention. Can't remember.

Well....maybe ERMP AND seaport are my favorite summer concert series. Here's some info on the first show and the dates:

The East River Music Project’s first show of 2008 will take place on Saturday, June 7th.

Curating and headlining the event will be Lucky Dragons, participants in this year’s Whitney Biennial and Tokion’s Creativity Now Conference.

This week sees the release of their new album Dream Island Laughing Language; the “Morning Ritual” can be heard here. For more Lucky Dragons audio, visit them at myspace.

Superdrag Interview

I brought in Brendan for this one. In advance of their upcoming NYC gig with Nada Surf @ Terminal 5 this Fri April 11, which I am very excited for, Brendan sent some questions over to John of Superdrag. Here's the Q&A:

Q. Superdrag fans were surprised and delighted last Fall when we learned that the original line up was reforming to play some shows. With more dates planned and a new album on the way, many are curious how this reunion came about. What made now feel like the right thing at the right time?

J: For one thing, I think alot of the music on my last record (ARIGATO!) and alot of what I had written in the meantime just sounded like Superdrag music. I guess between the four of us we just had means, motive and opportunity to do it and everybody was down for it.

Q. Speaking of the new album, a recent blurb in Nashville Scene described the atmosphere in the studio as "closer to a backyard game of horseshoes than an album session." Talk a little bit about that. How is the feel in the studio different this time around compared to past experiences making a Superdrag album?

J: Ha. Yeah, that was funny. Horseshoes. It's been interesting because we've been concentrating our times to work into very short, very focused blasts of activity where everybody just shows up well-prepared to do what they're going to do with absolutely no screwing around. Like, shooting for maximum effectiveness at all times because we're trying to track 3 or 4 songs top-to-bottom in 2 days or whatever. Sort of the opposite of how we approached a record like "Head Trip In Every Key", for instance. So it's probably some of the most focused work we've ever done, but because there are absolutely no external pressures and no obligations to anyone except ourselves and the people who'll want to hear this record, it's also been about the most at-ease we've ever been on any of the albums.

Q. Whenever I mention that one of my favorite bands is from Nashville people assume it must be a Country group. There's probably a pretty widely held misconception that Nashville doesn't rock. You guys have worked to dispel that myth. So does Nashville, in fact, rock? Is there a thriving club scene there?

J: Oh, definitely. There are plenty of clubs, plenty of bands, plenty of committed people trying to get it happening for themselves. And a great deal of diversity musically.

Q. I've read a lot of interviews in which musicians confess to never listening to their own records after they've been released. Often times they get burned out on their songs having heard them zillions of times during the writing, recording, and mixing phase of the process. How 'bout you? Do you ever find yourself sitting back and listening to Head Trip in Every Key or Last Call for Vitriol? Is it hard to listen to your songs without second guessing certain aspects of the finished product?

J: Hmm. No, I haven't heard either one of those records in a long while. I listened to Regretfully Yours before we started rehearsing for last year's shows, and I hated it less than I remembered. I have always sort of held a grudge against that album; not the songs, but my performance on it. And the way it was mixed. I'm not a big second-guesser; we're pretty deliberate nowadays.

Q. This one's for John specifically. John, how have you found the song writing process to be different as a solo artist than it is when you're creating music with Superdrag, particularly this time around?

J: I wouldn't say it's any different.

Q. This is kind of a goofy one. I was once asked, "If you could wake up to one song, every morning for an entire year, what would it be?" My answer was True Believer by Superdrag. 'Seems only appropriate that I pose this question to you now. Imagine it: every morning for 365 straight days, instead of an annoying alarm clock, you're coaxed out of bed by one song. What would it be?

J: John Coltrane, "A Love Supreme: Part 1: Acknowledgement." That would do nicely. Or "Better Git It In Your Soul" by Charles Mingus.

Q. A couple videos were posted on your webpage recently of the studio work you've been doing at Lake Fever, in which we see John playing bass and Tom singing and playing guitar. Is that sort of thing typical during a Superdrag recording?

J: No, that'll be a first on this album. I played some of the bass on In The Valley Of Dying Stars, and of course Sam Powers contributed songs to the last proper album, but this will be the first time Tom, Brandon and Don have all three taken part in the songwriting. We haven't really been collaborating thusfar, but everybody's bringing good material in. I love "Cheap Poltergeists."

Q. On a recent road trip my buddy Scott commented about how much he could hear the influence of Teenage Fanclub in Superdrag's Pine Away. From which bands would you say Superdrag has drawn their greatest influence?

J: Sebadoh. Dinosaur Jr. Definitely Teenage Fanclub. My Bloody Valentine. The Beatles. Hüsker Dü.

Q. No one wants to be the guy to ask the standard, boring "What can we expect on the new album" question. But, um, what can we expect on the new album? Are there any particular themes, sounds, or styles you've collectively tried to steer the music toward?

J: We just want to make a complete musical statement---something that's completely honest. I feel if there is such thing as a "signature" Superdrag album, now would probably be a good time to make it.

Lollapalooza '08

Windy City, here I come.

I was tempted last year, but this year is just overwhelming. Radiohead/The Cure (and Pixies/Flaming Lips) took me cross-country in '04. Lolla will take me 1/2 cross-country in '08. Here's the lineup, with acts I'm especially excited about highlighted:

SHOW HAS BEEN MOVED!

This one is no longer going down at Market Hotel. Bummer. I was kind of looking forward to catching a show there for the first time. Here are the detail on the new locale:

"The show is no longer at the Market Hotel, instead, it’s been moved to a loft space at 132 W. 3rd St. 2nd Fl. - corner of 6th Ave (RIGHT NEXT TO THE MICKEY D’S). Everything else still stays the same - doors at 8pm, $7 bucks."

I feel like I have been to that space before. Maybe for a Fixed party. Hmmmm...

So I expect to see all of your shining, happy faces at this tomorrow:

Fuckin A. Opening Day(Night) is here. Rod already got a big RBI. Wang looks shakey, but it's early. Was weird seeing Torre in a Dodgers uniform yesterday, but not so weird seeing Girardi announced as manager today. I keep waiting for stupid YES to show some good camera shots of the new stadium, but they are showing people getting on and off the sub and the courthouse instead. Gah.

The show last night @ Pianos was definitely as good as BV has been hyping it today. And Bryan's pics do rock. Bell broke my heart with that videotape/eraser cover. Have to catch her again very soon. The new Takka Takka were excellent. Big things in store for those guys. First time seeing John Vanderslice and St. Vincent (sort of, does last night count?). I pretty much was made a fan after the very first song.

Update - Wow. Melky is putting on a show out in center.

I received a very nice little surprise yesterday. The new Annuals/Sunfold split EP. Annuals are sounding Cloud Cultier than ever (I mean that in a good way, not in a ripoff way). I haven't been paying enough attention to other blogs recently, so not sure how common knowledge this is, but if you don't know about Sunfold, they are just Annuals alter ego. All the same members, different lead singer and much different sound. I can't decide which I like more. Have they ever played out as Sunfold? In NYC? I hope they do, and soon.

And finally.... I can't even begin to explain how obsessed I am with the new The Secret Life of Sofia songs that have been slowly trickling onto their Myspace. I CAN NOT wait to get my hands on the new album.

RIP(?) - Benzos

Loyal Friends,

benzos has decided to go on an indefinite hiatus with no plans for any performances or recordings in the future. This was not an easy decision by the band members, mainly due to all the supporters out there who have been emailing us to come play their city or town. We apologize to those great people. Since the band formed as a trio in late 2002 and went through many incarnations, member changes, sound alterations and the years, months, weeks, days and hours being taking our show to a venue nearest you, Christian, Brian, Eiko & Steve extend their appreciation for your support, in any way you've shown it. Buying or downloading our albums, attending our shows, saying hi after a performance or the many emails and comments left for us. It has kept us going and meant everything to this band. Thank you endlessly for that.

Here is some news on what each of the members has embarked on that we'd like to share with you:

Christian has been busy with both his new band, With Lions, and transitioning over to the producer's chair. With Lions, a duo featuring Anthony "Woody" Ranere, of Lake Trout is currently recording their debut in both Jersey City and Baltimore, which marks a huge leap in sound for the two. With Lions influences range from Nine Inch Nails, Chemical Brothers, John Murphy (composer of "28 Days/Weeks Later) mixed with an orchestral background. You can find out more about them here at www. myspace. com/withlionsmusic . In the production end of things, he is currently producing the album of New Jersey's, Ohshin, (with a few completed songs at www. myspace. com/ohshin) where you'll also be able to hear him on bass, synths and harmonies. He has been splitting his time between his home studio in Jersey City and Baltimore's Wrightway Studios (where "Branches" was recorded) as a member of their production/composition/licensing team with many more production projects coming up with bands such as Pittsburgh's Shade, among others. Check back at the With Lions page for future updates.

Brian has spent his time focusing on his family, as well as a new project with Steve and other collaborators. Focusing mainly on instrumental, improvisational composition, they are currently rehearsing new material. He also has a solo project being developed that will be produced by himself and Christian, which will focus more on the singer/songwriter sound, not unlike Wilco and Iron & Wine. Stay tuned for more on both of these projects at his page , which can be found in our "Top Friends" and linked to his name in the "Band Members" section.

Eiko has continued to work on his longtime, labor of love, Elco Deck (www. myspace. com/elcodeck). This features him as the sole multi-instrumentalist and writer. Elco Deck's sound is in the hip-hop, acoustic-folk realm. Along with that, he is a member of collective, BoomClique, which features Steve, as well. Now living in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, he's been writing and recording material daily. Check his myspace page for more updates, music and videos.

Steve has returned his focus to his solo career as the Drum n' Bass/Jazz/Hip-Hop extraordinaire, Cru Jonez (www. myspace. com/crujonez). Recently releasing his self-produced debut, "The Dynamic" and performing all over NYC. That, along with his many production efforts and other collaborations named above. You can keep updated with his doings on his myspace page.

Thanks again for your support of benzos. We hope to see you, hear from you, and have our new projects be added by you so we can keep in touch for the future. We will always maintain the benzos page so that we can continue to communicate with you, our friend and supporter.

RIP - The North Atlantic

As many of you know, The North Atlantic’s waters have been still for some time. We got back from tour in December of 2006 exhausted and broke. We’d covered a lot of ground. We recorded a few more demo tracks, wrote a lot of music, and enjoyed reconnecting with our friends and family here in San Diego. We played our last show at Denverfest this year, and it was a sight to behold.

The North Atlantic is done. The fun, however, is just getting started.

Jason H. and Jason R. have a new thing going. Defying the laws of probability, they teamed up with another Jason: Clark, the producer of Wires in the Walls, and added a Jeremy (on drums) to the mix. The result is Big Science, and you can find out a whole lot more about them
here. I’m excited by what they’re doing and can’t wait to get out and see their first show, which will be in Chicago. Keep your eyes peeled for further announcements. Add ’em on Myspace. Tag their name on your grandma’s Buick. Kick a eunuch where his nuts should be, but do it in their honor.

I’m playing in Pen and Ink, a band here in San Diego. We’re having a good time and playing the odd show, but we’re all working stiffs with other things occupying most of our time. I’m headed to Texas in the summertime, where I’ll be starting my first faculty job. I plan on taking up weekly residence at Rubber Gloves in Denton, so if you’re touring in the area, be sure to let me know.

The North Atlantic meant more to us than we’ll ever really be able to articulate. It was eight years of our lives, spread across two cities, fifteen tours, over 500 shows and a lifetime’s worth of great friends. It was some of the best moments of our lives, and indeed, some of the worst. What was always amazing was how those two things could sometimes be separated by seconds.

I’ll be updating this page periodically with information about our comings and goings, and any otherwise unreleased music we see fit to post. We’ve got a few things in the hopper, but I don’t want to say too much about those at this point.

It’s been great. See you all up the road a bit.

Cut Copy @ Studio B

Early front runner for my favorite show of the year. Cut Copy are the perfect band for a place like Studio B and everyone there last night was in full on party mode. The Fixed DJs already had the crowd moving before Cut Copy got on stage and once they started playing it seemed like every single person in the typically overcrowded room was dancing. This show was everything that I was hoping LCD @ Studio B would be, but just wasn't. Their set was tight and focused without any pomp and circumstance. The new songs were all sorts of dancey and fun, especially Lights and Music, and the now classics Saturdays and Time Stands Still were bounce fests. There was no Daft Punk cover, like they did the last time I saw them, opening for Rapture at Bowery, but that's fine. I get the feeling that these guys know they have plenty of their own ammunition now. It will be hard to replicate the energy of last nights performance at little Mercury tomorrow on a Monday night, but I'm sure it will still be a good time. Take note apprehensive newcomers, Cut Copy are the real thing, on the verge of greatness.

Can't believe people are still stopping by, after how much I have been neglecting you. Therefore, I feel compelled to continue on some way some how. What I think I am going to do is just start compiling thing that I think may be falling through the cracks. And even if they have been well documented, maybe I can add to the exposure.

The Mugs are doing a residency at Rockwood in March! Shhhhhaaaaweeet.

BTW - that Cake Shop show that I mentioned in my last post was exactly like the name of one of the band that played there that night. EXCELLENT. The Mugs, The Diggs, and Mussels were amazing as always and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Excellent. Look em up.

So that's what I'm going to do. Jot down stuff and then blast out some big posts occasionally. And then maybe/hopefully this place will eventually go old school.

In the meantime. Keep your eyes peeled to the After The Jump site for info on our SXSW shows. Megabadassness is about to drop.

I'm slowly becoming a bigger and bigger fan of Band of Horses. Saw them for the first time @ Blender during CMJ and thought they were great. It's taken me a while to warm to them, but they have just about completely won me over. That Grizzly Bear song was one of my favorites from when I saw them @ their Wordless show. That one, and the unnamed new one that they ended their set with, which is still rattling in my brain. I feel that GB's next album could be their OK Computer. Glad that we finally got an explanation about Reckoner yesterday. One of my favorites from In Rainbows. I like that Beirut song, but their EP is where it's at in '07. Luke Temple's people have been hammering me with PR, but I'm not sure if his sound is my thing. It's interesting enough, but I don't know. Took me long enough to get into Sufjan, and even him I'm not totally enamored with.

Radiohead - Touring US in '08

This news is about to be everywhere. Via Atease:

As the plans look like now, Radiohead will start their upcoming tour in America. When asked by Steve Lamacq Ed O’Brien confirmed that the band are indeed starting their tour in May.

Ed said that it’s still ‘up in the air’ and that plans might change, but Radiohead will tour in May, June/July, kicking off for a few weeks in America. Ed: “We probably go out in May.”

When asked if Glastonbury is on the agenda, Ed said: “Everything is on the agenda. We're sort of finalizing dates at the moment. We’ll see. If they want us. We don’t know yet. We’ve got schedule A, schedule B, schedule C. None of this is confirmed.”

I'm going, going, back, back, to Cali, Cali.

Anyone still out there? Needless to say, VERY VERY VERY busy recently. Although, I did get to see Nada Surf (Maybe my fav Nada show to date! New songs were solid.) and The Jealous Girlfriends (liked them much more than the last time I saw them at Mercury) at Union Hall last week. The Aeroplane Pageant show at Union Hall is with two other KO bands, The Mugs and Beat Radio. Hey out-of-towners, if you want to experience the best in NYC rock, it doesn't get much better than that. Also *Highly Recommended.

News From The Antlers / A Brief Smile

Ahoy.

So here's what's happening. I self-released In The Attic Of The Universe for free last March. Since then, via webstats and those lovely torrenting and file hosting folks, it's come to my attention that over 10,000 people have downloaded the album! Not kidding!

Now the good folk at Fall Records will be re-releasing the album on November 6th, and it will come in new packaging (re-designed by Miss Zan Goodman) and re-mastered (by Mr. Shelly Blake-Plock).

The ever-growing band and I will be playing a show to celebrate this re-release, at Piano's on Saturday, November 3rd. Playing on this bill with us will be Bubble/Gum and A Brief Smile.

In further news, I've begun work on the new album, entitled "Hospice". While I'm still playing control-freak on this one, I'll, for the first time, have other people playing on the record. Lots of other people. I'm still working in my amorphous home studio, but will be transporting it all over the place. I can't really say when it will be done, but hopefully before the new year. Here's a picture:

I highly recommend being at Pianos on Sat Nov 3, and not just for The Antlers. Go for A Brief Smile too. ABS have just recently sent over their new album and I like it a lot. Hometown boys The National have been touring pretty much nonstop since the release of "Boxer" earlier this Spring. When they hit town over the weekend for a performance at the Madison Theatre, we got Matt and Aaron to drop by for a stripped down set.

In the interview, Shiv talks to the guys about their travels and the process of recording the new album. You'll hear 2 songs from "Boxer" in the performance as well as a b-side that originally surfaced on the "Lit Up" single.
