The Muggabears @ Mercury - Fri July 13

But first, about last night. Another excellent performance from The Muggabears. I found myself thinking during their set about how great they would sound in a large outdoor festival setting, turned up real loud. That's the kind of music these guys play. It just seems too large for a small room. But the small rooms will have to do for now. So now that this show has past, they have announced their next, which will also be at Mercury Lounge. And the best part is - I already had tickets! They are playing with Besnard Lakes, The Jealous Girlfriends, and Dappled Cities on Fri July 13. Get your tix soon, because this show will most likely sell out. $12 Here are the set times:

- 11:30 -
Besnard Lakes
- 10:30 -
The Jealous Girlfriends
- 9:30 -
Dappled Cities
- 8:30 -
The Muggabears

This is the same night as Menomena at the Seaport. Should be able to get to Merc in time to catch at least half of The Muggabears set. Also - Sean reports that Dappled Cities are moving to NYC (for the rest of the year? permanently?). Let's welcome them to the neighborhood.

Some other thoughts about last night's show:

Up The Empire - Now a three piece? Very loud. Wish they had played some songs off of the EP (and/or had the EP at the Merch table). The new stuff live reminded me of Rahim. Also sounded a lot like Q And Not U. Good shit.

Memphis - Wasn't really feeling the first half of their set, which was very Dave Matthews Stars. And not Before These Crowded Streets DMB, more like Everyday DMB. Yeah.....

But about half way through Torquil requested that the lights be turned off and that everyone sit down. Then they played a song that Torquil described as "a Ghost song." I was hooked. One of the coolest moments I've ever experienced at the Merc. The set continued to impress after that too, especially the last song (name?), which got me dancing.

Apostle Of Hustle - So so so so so good. Cut and pasted from the comments over at BV:

AOH were absolutely fantastic last night. Great set of songs from both albums. Wish I has the set list. High energy. Funny in between song banter. Sound was ideal. And a bunch of songs were played acoustic. That's what I especially loved - the set was so varied. They're not a one trick band, where all the songs sound the same, one after another. Definitely not to be missed at Summerstage this weekend. Anyone got pics of last night???
