Pinback - New Video - From Nothing To Nowhere

I don't think I have officially stated this here yet - > Pinback's new album Autumn of the Seraphs is one of my top 5 favorite albums of the year so far and I have listened to it more than any other album this summer. It is very, very good, maybe even better than Summer In Abaddon, which is one of my all-time favorite albums. Pre-order it here. I am super-amped for their upcoming Nokia show on Tues Oct 9. Tix still available. $20

CYHSY Openers

I am sure that you are well aware of the two NYC CYHSY shows in September, both of which are sold out. One on Tues Sept 11 @ Blender/Gramercy and the other on Mon Sept 10 at Northsix/Music Hall (is it ok if I just keep calling this place Northsix? I think you'll know what I'm referring to).

Well, for those of you that are lucky enough to have tix to these shows, I have some good news, that you may or may NOT be aware of. Two great bands are going to be opening at both of these shows. One of the bands is The Teeth, who's video I just posted today here. The other band is responsible for one of the best albums I have heard this year. They are also probably the band that I have posted about more than any other except maybe Aeroplane Pageant. Yes, of course, it's Mussels.

Clap, Teeth, and Mussels. That is one hell of show.

These two shows are also just the beginning of a busy month for Mussels (well, busy for them). They will also be playing at Union Hall with Life In Bed on Thurs Sept 20 and Union Pool with The iO's on Thurs Sept 27.

New Femme Generation

FG checking in:

freakin' finally! i'm not usually one to bulletin or mass mail scores of people, but Cthulu came to me in a dream and said that if i didn't let everyone i know about our upcoming EP/7'' combo "The Future Called, They Want Their Sound Back" that he would emerge from Lake Ontario and wreak a havoc unmatched since whatshisface couldn't get the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man out of his head. i don't really feel like calling his bluff and neither should you, so please do the world a favour and check out the new shit. we worked really hard on it and we might cry ourselves to sleep if you don't.

lovingly,
B of FG

They're gonna make it but they're never gonna make it big. Four new songs are pumping on their Myspace. At least two of them are about A-listers and/or their wolves.

New Wolf Parade Songs

Using ^this^ and this, this guy put together this. Enjoy.

Very good show Sunday night. Crowd was feeling it. New songs sounded promising. The sound wasn't spectacular and the technical difficulties were a minor distraction, but by the end of the encore all that was forgotten. The kielbasa, pirogies, and polish drafts HIT THE SPOT. For the gazillionth time - I love Warsaw!

The Echo Project

Just found out about this festival that is taking place in Atlanta in October. The lineup is interesting, but definitely no where near as travel worthy as Vegoose. The reason I am mentioning this fest though, is that I just read a rumor that The White Stripes, Bob Dylan, and .... Radiohead will soon be added to the lineup. The rumor pointed out how this is festival is very eco friendly as a way of rationalizing Radiohead's addition. It seems like Radiohead and Bob Dylan are supposed to play all over the world at every festival every summer. File the Radiohead part of this rumor under doubtful. Here is the lineup so far:

The Flaming Lips - The Killers - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Cat Power & Dirty Delta Blues - MSTRKRFT - Man Man - The Album Leaf - The Polyphonic Spree - Son Volt - Thievery Corporation - The Roots - Les Claypool - Cypress Hill - Phil Lesh & Friends - moe. - Stephen Marley - The Bravery - Secret Machines - The Brazilian Girls - The Avett Brothers - RJD2 - The Disco Biscuits - Umphrey's McGee - Michael Franti & Spearhead - Rodrigo y Gabriela - JJ Grey & Mofro - Perpetual Groove - Lyrics Born - Tea Leaf Green - The Benevento / Russo Duo - The Egg - ALO - Toubab Krewe - Spam Allstars - Greenskeepers - The Afromotive - Lazaro Casanova - Telepath - and many more...

Priceless

One of the best show flyers I've ever seen.

R.I.P. Phil "The Scooter" Rizzuto

As you probably have noticed, I've been a little busy recently. Haven't had much time for blogging. One thing in particular that I wanted to post about was the passing of Phil Rizzuto, who I grew up with while watching Yankee games. I liked the Steinbrenner quote that "Heaven must have needed a shortstop."

Holy cow.

Here are two videos I took at the pool yesterday. Both videos get better about a 1/4 of the way in. I was crashed into a few times while shooting them, so they are a little shaky. If they are too small for you, try watching them in full screen. I think they look much better that way. Enjoy.

Mussels - News, iTunes, eMusic

More places for you to buy Mussels' Little Voices! The album is now available on iTunes and eMusic.

Sadly, their Luna Lounge show has been cancelled/postponed. BUT! They will be plugging in in the month of August. The band will be playing at ClevelandFest on Sat Aug 25 @ The Hook. Another band I very much want to see again, This Moment In Black History, are also playing, but WHY??? Why Aug 25th???? Why??? Argggg.

The only confirmed date after ClevelandFest is Thurs Sept 20 @ Union Hall with Life In Bed (!!).

I have also been informed that the band has been working on some new tunes that will likely get their live debut at these two shows. Nice.

Mist and Mast

Some good news and some bad news.

First, the bad news - The Red Thread, a band I was patiently waiting to come to NYC, have disbanded. So much for that.

The good news - A new band has risen from their ashes that are just as great - Mist and Mast. I was listening to the songs on their Myspace for a while today (before I recieved The Mugs album). Go give 'em a listen. Songs are off their album which is due in October.

Now I have a new band to wait for.

Dead Rabbit @ Tommy's Tavern - This Fri - Aug 10

The Mugs - Here Tomorrow

Just listened to The Mugs new album, Here Tomorrow, straight through for the first time. Some quick thoughts -> I LOVE IT. Solid beginning to end. It's fuller and riskier than Paper Scissors Rock, but it's definitely a Mugs album. The news songs that I have already heard live sound just as great on the album.

Want a taste? Here's the album opener and closer:

Jonny Greenwood - Wordless Music - Jan 16,17 '08

The Yeti has dropped a bomb today. So big, I've cut/pasted the whole post:

Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood will be coming to the States to showcase his piece "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" as part of the 2007-2008 Wordless Music Series. Full Schedule Here. Supposedly this piece is pretty fantastic - so much that it won Radio 3 Listeners' Award at the 2006 BBC British Composer Awards. Wikipedia, the internet's bastion of veracity says, "The piece was inspired by radio static and the extended, dissonant chords of Polish composer Penderecki's 'Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima'." Pitchfork, the internet's bane of opinion says, "As a classical know-nothing, I would be a fool to try to describe the 18-minute-plus piece other than to say that, like a lot of things Radiohead does, it's both pretty and a little creepy."

Tickets are on sale for most of the Wordless shows, but not this one yet.

Jan. 16, 2008 & Jan. 17, 2008
Jonny Greenwood: Popcorn Superhet Receiver
The Wordless Music Orchestra
Brad Lubman, Conductor

Just Pretend has more about the piece and a link to a download.

AWESOME.

So...the big ? is...how does this fit in with all the upcoming LP7 hoopala?

Update: Tix on sale Friday at Noon. $29.99

The Brainwasher @ 200 Orchard - Tomorrow - 8/4

I like what I've heard from Lismore. Don't know much about The Glass, but the sluts are big fans.

Alamo Race Track @ The Annex - Pics

I didn't make it out to the show last night, but my friend Anne did and she's going to send me a review soon. Until then, here are some pics she took:

Update: Anne's review and set list:

The crowd came out to The Annex in the Lower East Side for Club NME openers Alamo Race Track. All the way here from Amsterdam, Minty Fresh recording artist Alamo Race Track had the audience on their feet through nine songs from their sophomore record "Black Cat John Brown". BCJB has only been out in the US since July 24th, but good reviews in the press and blog world, a frenzied following on You Tube, and being the #1 album in Lincoln, Nebraska has created quite a buzz that had the crowd shouting out requests to singer Ralph Mulder. While the band was unable to accommodate the shout out for "Wild Bees" off of their first record "Birds at Home", they did close with crowd and sing-a-long favorite "The Northern Territory". Hopefully the band will soon return to NY to treat us to more music and play my request for "We Like To Go On". Yes I'm awaKe to keep myself from falling.......

Mad Men

I just want to make sure that you are all watching. Believe the hype -> Mad Men is the best show on TV. It has completely filled the void that was left behind after the series finale of Six Feet Under, my all-time favorite show, and Don Drapper is the new Nate Fisher. Good luck to any other drama that has hopes of winning an Emmy anytime soon. If someone has a link to a good article that explains why this show is on AMC and not HBO, could you please put it in the comments. Thanx.

Palomar - New Video - Top Banana

Quite possibly the most ridiculous video I have ever seen.

Changes

You may have noticed that I have been tinkering with the sidebar. Seemed like the recent posts and Upcoming sections would be more useful at the top. Also, I've added a link to my email (I stole Sean's secret code). There are some other changes I want to make too, which may result in an all out redesign. Is there anything that you would like to see changed? I'm open for suggestions.

Update: New content! I have added a "What I'm Listening To" section (thanx Steve) and links to just about every NYC venue that I post about on a regular basis. If you would like to see your venue listed, let me know. If you would like to see your album in the WILT, send me shwag. jk

The Party Faithful - R.I.P. Lolita Bras

Explanation:

Hey People –

No mincing of words: we are changing the name by which you’ve known us. Mohammed Ali did it - why not us?

Like most meaningful changes, this one was bourn out of adversity. Delays, difficult lineup changes, and a general malaise plagued the band in much of 2006 and early 2007. In fact, they nearly broke us up! But starting with our emergence as a trio back in March of this year, a sense that a real sea change was afoot began to creep in. This feeling persisted through the spring and into an incredibly productive and happy summer, which we’ve spent in the studio writing and recording. The new songs feel different – brighter, more energetic, less brooding – an honest reflection of who we are now. Barring catastrophe, a new release should be coming out in September or October, and we’ll have a slew of shows, starting August 10 at Club Midway (NYC).

We’ve decided to celebrate this newness and optimism by making a symbolic break with the past. “Lolita Bras” is dead. Long live The Party Faithful!

Love,
Patrick, Paul & Erica

The band's first show as The Party Faithful is next Friday at Midway:

Update: Here's a link to their website and the correct link to their Myspace, where you can go to listen to three new songs, some or all (?) of which will appear on their upcoming EP.

Jupiter One - New Video, Shows

Check out Jupiter One's video for "Countdown":

Some info re: the video via their Myspace:

We spent many sleepless nights moving 15 frames per second by hand and taking still photographs. K's apartment floor was covered in sand for weeks...we cut around so many pictures of ourselves that I feel like my own stalker. Happy to report there was only ONE fight during this 3 month long process. (me & Zac....no broken noses)

All the "Real Images" were conceived and directed by Zach Bliss.

All the Stop Motion Images were conceived and directed by K Ishibashi.....brought to life by Jupiter One & TK.
