Mon Oct 9 - Bowery Ballroom $15
Tues Oct 10 - Northsix $15

Mates of State - Irving Plaza

The Long Winters aren't the only Barsuk band coming to NYC in Sept:

The Long Winters - Other Music, Bowery Ballroom

The Long Winters are coming! In support of their excellent new album, Putting The Days To Bed. Here are the dates:

Wed Aug 9th - John Roderick solo - Other Music @ 8:00PM
Fri Sept 29th - Bowery Ballroom

Unfortunately, these guys have shows the day before and after the Bowery date, so they won't be able to follow the current trend and add a second date, even though the 28th is open.

Bound Stems - Appreciation Night, Back To NYC

I didn't get my hands on The Logic of Building the Body Plan EP until 2006. Therefore, even though it was released at the very end of 2005, I consider it one of my favorite EP's of 2006. My love for this EP has been increasingly fueling my anticipation for Bound Stems' full length debut, Appreciation Night. So you can only imagine how psyched I was when I received an email with 3 mp3s of songs from the new album. These songs are fantastic and sound like a strong movement forward from the EP. Download them and listen for yourself. Here are the links:

Andover
Western Biographic
Refuse the Refuse

The album is set to be released Sept 19 on Flameshovel Records, one of my favorite labels.

Bound Stems were here earlier this month for a show at Mercury Lounge. They are coming back to NYC for another show at Mercury Lounge on Wed Aug 30.

Birdmonster Fall Tour - Three NYC Shows

In addition to a show at Mercury Lounge on Thurs Sept 7 (via BV), Birdmonster will also be at Maxwell's on Wed Sept 6 and Union Hall on Fri Sept 8. The lineup at Union Hall is the same as the Merc show, Catfish Haven, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, except no The Sammies. Been hearing a lot of good things about SSLYBY recently, who were part of the "official siren afterparty" at Mercury Lounge with Aeroplane Pageant.

Speaking of Aeroplane Pageant, today they posted two new songs on their Myspace. REMINDER - their last show of the summer is tonight at Pianos.

ERMP - July 22nd - Cancelled

Cancelled.

Suckus Maximus.

Here's the info:

unfortunately, between the daunting weather forecast and our inability to swallow the cost of a rained-out show, we have to cancel tomorrow’s concert now. we’ve never cancelled a show before, and doing so pains us a great deal, but after much (depressing) discussion, we feel we don’t have a choice.
we’ll make every effort to reschedule the date for later this summer, and if that doesn’t work, we’ll definitely rebook as many of the bands as possible next season.
we are so, so sorry to have to do this, but the weather has backed us into a corner. thank you so much for your interest in ERMP, and hopefully we’ll see you in august under sunnier circumstances.

On the less depressing tip, 2 great bands, Clogs and The End of The World, have been added to the upcoming ERMPs. Here are the updated lineups:

Silversun Pickups - Union Hall

Rumor had it that Silversun Pickups were going to be playing at this weekend's pool party at McCarren Park Pool. Unfortunately, that rumor ended up being false. Now a new Brooklyn date is listed for the band at OMR. They claim that the band will be at Union Hall, not to be confused with Union Pool, on Mon Aug 7th at 8:00PM with Daylight's for Birds (ex-On!Air!Library!). They are usually right, so I'll take their word for it, even though the date is not listed on Silversun Pickup's website or Myspace. There is a gap between their DC show on Aug 6th and their WOXY lounge act on Aug 9th, so...

I've never been to Union Hall. Apparently it's new:

i'm a brand-spankin' new bar, located in lovely Park Slope, Brooklyn. you'll find me just off 5th Ave., at 702 Union Street, next to the gym. i've got two bocce courts (my sister bar is Floyd NY in Brooklyn Heights), TONS of cozy seating, a delicious menu of tasty bar food, and an AMAZING downstairs room for private parties, rock shows, and lots of other eclectic and awesome events. i don't mean to brag, baby, but i'm huuuuuuuuge. if you know what i mean.

Their Myspace also says that they had a Siren afterparty with Stars and Dirty On Purpose??? Did anyone go? Here's the full list of upcoming Union Hall shows.

McCarren Park Pool, Union Pool, Union Hall.... sheesh.

Update: BV's got some Union Hall info.

Forget Cassettes - Pianos & Union Pool

De Novo Dahl aren't the only superb Theory 8 band that are coming to NYC for a show at Pianos. Forget Cassettes (Myspace) are coming too. But they are also going to stop by Brooklyn as well for a show at Union Pool with a bunch of other fun bands. The info via their website:

September 1st, 2006
New York City, NY.
PIANOS

September 2nd, 2006
Brooklyn, NY.
UNION POOL
w/ the detachment kit, read yellow, the art of shooting
9pm

These dates are part of a tour in support of their new album Salt, which will be in stores on August 8th. Judging by the single The Catch, this album should be just as fantastic as Instruments of Action.

Also, if I was going to be in Nashville on August 11th, I would be at the Salt Release Party at Exit/In, because one of my favorite bands, The Whole Fantastic World, are opening for them.

The Office - Webisodes

Have begun. There are two so far. I can't wait until Season 3 begins.

As much as I also love Scrubs and Arrested Development, I'm pulling for The Office to win the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Give the award for Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series to Arrested Development. BTW - How was Lost NOT nominated for Outstanding Drama Series?

De Novo Dahl

De Novo Dahl are coming back to NYC. Another great band on one of my favorite labels, Theory 8 Records. I don't think that they have been here since last fall for CMJ. They will be at Pianos on Tues Aug 1 at 7:30PM, where I assume they will be playing lots of songs from their new album which should be out soon. Here's the full lineup:

Tues 8/1 7:30 doors $8

The Long Winters - Putting The Days To Bed

Just discovered that their new album is streaming here (Thanx WOXY!). Listening to it for the first time now and loving it. It's just as good if not better than When I Pretend to Fall. A bit more relaxed and band-oriented, imho.

I have been looking forward to their return to NYC for a long time now. No full band date yet, but John Roderick is playing at this incredible show, which apparently now includes David Byrne as well.

Official Band Website

Nashville's Oh No! Oh My! took a detour into the Lounge while on their way to New York City to play
Insound's pre-Siren Festival party.

We ended up with a full house as two of our favorite bloggers (Matt from
You Ain't No Picasso and Nathaniel from I Guess I'm Floating), some listeners, and a friend of the band all came in to watch them play.

This was the band's very first performance with 6 members (only 3 of them recorded the album). They played 4 tracks from their current self-titled release and 1 older track during the session. The interview portion finds Mike asking the band about their rapid success and they discuss the advantages of going the self-released route.

Love 'Never Was There A Town'. Buy it. It just missed my Mid Year Top 5. Definitely top 10. Would have liked to have seen them at this bbq with Aeroplane Pageant. But it's ok. They have a show coming up. Slowlands will be playing the same day as Aeroplane Pageant again, but this time they will be at Lit and AP will be at Pianos. Hopefully the set times work out so that it will be possible to see both.

3 Bands

Band #1 - Voxtrot

An odd show. Last time I saw these guys was during CMJ at a day party at Rothko. There were maybe 100 people there. This time it's at Prospect Park with an audience that was most likely in the thousands. Very happy for Voxtrot, who deserve it. They seemed a little nervous at first, which is to be expected, but that went away very quickly. Loved their set and can't wait to see them again, perferably somewhere just a little bit smaller. And without chairs.

Note to Celebrate Brooklyn! folks - the chairs suck. Why give the audience an excuse to sit on their asses and give a NYC crowd an excuse to be lifeless. However, chair dancing is always fun, and I excell at it.

- Break for dinner at San Loco. The food was great, the Margaritas were greater. BTW - coming soon - San Loco Williamsburg. Nice. On N4th between Bedford and Driggs.

Band #2 - Tally Hall

Heard that these guys were fun and quickly realized how much of an understatement that is. This band reminds me of music for the soundtrack of a mid-90's teen flick. Is it too early to be a 90's throwback? Hell no. My main impression of these guys is that it seems like they are going for it. You can tell that they probably practice a ton and they have their set down. They nailed this show. Was told afterwards that MTV was taping for a "You hear it first" piece. Maybe that's why they brought their A+ game. At first I thought, "Um, I think these guys just stole the show," but then....

Band #3 - Birdmonster

What a payoff. Been psyched about seeing these guys for a while and the excitement was peaked as they got on stage. They then proceeded to destroy. If any band out there need some energy, ask Birdmonster for some, because they have some to spare. Didn't know where to look because each member was doing something amazing. You know how some bands have that one guy who just stands there, usually the base player, and just grooves. No such guy in this band. I didn't fully understand the Springsteen comparisons that I've heard until seeing them live. Now I get it. Catch them live and you will too.

So these guys have one of my favorite albums of 2006 and one of my favorite performances of 2006. I guess I need to make room for them in my "current bands" top 10.
