Akron Family @ Bowery Ballroom - Sun Sept 30

Yes indeed. Akron Family are back to Bowery Ballroom on Sun Sept 30. This time w/ Bob Log III, Megafaun, and Greg Davis. Part of a tour beginning in September that will bring them down south to Florida, north up to Canada, and out west to California. All dates listed at their Myspace. Tix for Bowery not on sale yet.

I still can't get enough of Meek Warrior. Such a great album.

Parade

Here's something that I have been listening to today that you might enjoy. Parade's Answer Me EP. A band that would work well on a bill with Finest Dearest and Victory At Sea. Nice, poppy songs with female vocals. I am very picky when it comes to female fronted bands and this one gets my stamp of approval.

Parade are coming up from Atlanta in August for a show at Lit on the 17th.

I decided to go "old school" with my coverage of this show. Do not be alarmed if you are experiencing deja vu. I had a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon at the East River Amphitheater this past weekend. It was my first time seeing all of the bands and I liked them all. S-S-S-Spectres were my favorite though. There are much better pics over at ERMP's site.

Cloud Cult @ Bowery Ballroom - Sat Sept 8

I. Need. To. See. Cloud. Cult. Again. Really. Really. Really. Bad.

Bowery Ballroom. Sat Sept 8.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tix on sale this Fri June 29 @ noon. $15.

Absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing, will keep me from being at this show. This is a locked in, sure thing, will not miss show for me. It has been wwwwaaaaayyyyy too long since the last time I have seen them.

Born Ruffians Touring With Caribou

I saw Born Ruffians twice last year during CMJ. Turns out that the band will be in NYC in October again this year, but not for CMJ. Instead they will be touring with Caribou and playing at Bowery Ballroom on Sat(!) Oct 6. Tix not on sale yet, but apparently they will be $15.

Kind of an unlikely pairing if you ask me, but I like it.

Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew....

...now on Myspace.

But only "Tbtf" has been posted so far. Bummer. I was hoping that there would be some other songs off of Spirit If. Maybe there will be more soon.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that this whole thing is a little silly. Especially after hearing to beautiful to fuck. Why can't this just be Broken Social Scene's Spirit If, because that's what it feels like.

Tix still available for McCarren - Wed Aug 29. $29

Download - The A-Sides - WOXY Lounge Act

This lounge act was my first encounter with The A-Sides and they left a very nice first impression. Via WOXY:

The A-Sides
Performed June 21, 2007

Let's us introduce Philly rockers The A-Sides to you. We were sent an advance copy of their upcoming 2nd album and quickly went into action to get them into the studio. They were going to be passing through town on their way to Chicago and we thought that a Lounge Act session was a great way to give you an early listen to a band that we think are on their way to a very successful year.

They worked on the "Silver Storms" cd before getting signed to Vagrant, who will be releasing the album on August 28th. In this session you'll hear the band debut 4 of their new songs live in the Lounge.

Track Listing:
My Heroes Have Always Been Crazy

Updated WOXY Lounge Act schedule:

6/27 Palomar 3:00pm

7/5 Tacks, The Boy Disaster 4:00pm
7/20 Dirty On Purpose 1:30pm
7/25 Ra Ra Riot 4:00pm
7/27 The Sharp Things 4:30pm
8/3 Wussy 3:00pm
8/17 The Rentals 12:30pm

BUT....none of these will happen if everyone that enjoys WOXY and their lounge acts do not help Save Net Radio. I've signed the petition and emailed my representatives, have you??? WOXY and pretty much every other internet radio station are silent today in protest and it sucks. We cannot let greedy, ignorant bureaucrats kill internet radio. Please do your part.

Panda Bear @ Bowery - Set List

Unlike some of my companions, I liked the show. Very different from your average Bowery Ballroom / show going experience. One of the best sounding shows I've ever heard there. Only criticism I had -> It would have been nice to have a little bit of a breather between songs for clapping and to process each song. But that's about it. Check out the review and pics over at Stereogum.

My buddy Scott pointed out to me that at the homepage of their website a little cube pops up after a little while, which plays some random tunes. Hard to tell exactly what this stuff is. Some of it sounds like old demos. Maybe some of it is old unreleased stuff. Scott deftly describes them as "oddball tablescraps". He tracked down most of the mp3s, as follows:

USA Today's Top 25 Musical Moments....

...of the last 25 years.

I looked over some guy's shoulder yesterday and noticed that he was reading this list. It looked interesting, so when he was done reading and moved on to another section, I asked him if I could take a look. It's a very good list and hard to argue with. You can check it out here. Obviously, this is the part that I liked the most:

7 Radiohead (1997)

The most significant and influential British group of the era risked “commercial suicide,” according to its label, with the release of 1997’s OK Computer, an experimental pastiche of ambient electronica, art-rock and post-punk that by 2005 was declared the No. 1 album of the past 20 years in Spin.

#7!

The Muggabears @ Mercury - Fri July 13

But first, about last night. Another excellent performance from The Muggabears. I found myself thinking during their set about how great they would sound in a large outdoor festival setting, turned up real loud. That's the kind of music these guys play. It just seems too large for a small room. But the small rooms will have to do for now. So now that this show has past, they have announced their next, which will also be at Mercury Lounge. And the best part is - I already had tickets! They are playing with Besnard Lakes, The Jealous Girlfriends, and Dappled Cities on Fri July 13. Get your tix soon, because this show will most likely sell out. $12 Here are the set times:

- 11:30 -
Besnard Lakes
- 10:30 -
The Jealous Girlfriends
- 9:30 -
Dappled Cities
- 8:30 -
The Muggabears

This is the same night as Menomena at the Seaport. Should be able to get to Merc in time to catch at least half of The Muggabears set. Also - Sean reports that Dappled Cities are moving to NYC (for the rest of the year? permanently?). Let's welcome them to the neighborhood.

Some other thoughts about last night's show:

Up The Empire - Now a three piece? Very loud. Wish they had played some songs off of the EP (and/or had the EP at the Merch table). The new stuff live reminded me of Rahim. Also sounded a lot like Q And Not U. Good shit.

Memphis - Wasn't really feeling the first half of their set, which was very Dave Matthews Stars. And not Before These Crowded Streets DMB, more like Everyday DMB. Yeah.....

But about half way through Torquil requested that the lights be turned off and that everyone sit down. Then they played a song that Torquil described as "a Ghost song." I was hooked. One of the coolest moments I've ever experienced at the Merc. The set continued to impress after that too, especially the last song (name?), which got me dancing.

Apostle Of Hustle - So so so so so good. Cut and pasted from the comments over at BV:

AOH were absolutely fantastic last night. Great set of songs from both albums. Wish I has the set list. High energy. Funny in between song banter. Sound was ideal. And a bunch of songs were played acoustic. That's what I especially loved - the set was so varied. They're not a one trick band, where all the songs sound the same, one after another. Definitely not to be missed at Summerstage this weekend. Anyone got pics of last night???

Magnetic Field - This Thurs - July 21

Via Goes Cube:

Celebrate Cordless Recordings’ release of our EP “Beckon The Dagger God” by coming out to Magnetic Field (97 Atlantic Ave at Henry in Brooklyn) Thursday 6/21.

8:30pm HOPEWELL
9:30pm GOES CUBE
10:30pm FRESHKILLS

only $6 dollars.

Aeroplane Pageant - Back To The Ballroom

Remember that Mercury Lounge headlining show I recently told you about? Well it's been canceled. Why? Because they are going to be playing at the Bowery Ballroom again instead. And on another top notch lineup. Fri July 27. The great Robbers On High Street are headlining, and The Jealous Girlfriends are opening. Beyond worth the $13. Tix are on sale.

Multiple flyers coming soon. : p

Reminder - the final show of The Jealous Girlfriends Pianos residency is Thurs night.

Kinetic Stereokids

Been listening to Kinetic Stereokids' Basement Kids today. It's a good listen. Nothing groundbreaking, but definitely enjoyable. Stream the album here. Recommended for Cloud Cult fans. I also agree with their Myspace, that fans of instrumental Beastie Boys and some DJ Shadow would like this. Think more trip than hop. They have an NYC show on the horizon at Knitting Factory on Sun July 15. I have a feeling that this could be one of those bands that dominate live.

KO!R5 - Thank You, Set Lists

Thanx to everyone who came out Friday night. I don't know about you, but I had a fuckin awesome time. Best show so far? Pretty darn close, I'd say. Thank you Peel, The Antlers, Charles Bissell, and Cinema, Cinema. You guys amazed. Thanx again to everyone at Matchless (ps. - the new garden looks SICK!). Thanx to everyone who helped get the word out, especially WOXY. Thanx to Rachael and Pat for coming, and not getting too mad at me, sorry again!

Set lists:

Cinema, Cinema (Thanx for the sweet cards!)

Peel

Charles Bissell

I hope that Charles doesn't mind me posting that and yes it does say 6/06 Maxwell's. Apparently it's the same set list that he has been using at all of his solo shows for the past year. I feel a little guilty having it. I did not steal it though, it was given to me. Thanx Sean (He didn't steal it either). The Antlers didn't have a set list because they just played In The Attic Of The Universe straight through (AWESOME). And another song off of Uprooted as a sort of encore. Can't. remember. name. Stupid beer. Peter said it was the first time he was playing it on an electric guitar.

Pics coming soon.

So this is probably going to be my last show for a while. Too much going on this summer. I'd rather you all just went to the free shows at the Seaport, Summerstage, Pool, Prospect, etc. However, I can tell you that I will be doing a 2nd Annual CMJ pre-party on Sat Oct 13. Should be a banger.

The Mugs - New Album, Record Release Party

Just noticed this over at their website:

august 28th is the date set for the release of our yet-to-be-named new full-length album.

we’re excited about setting the date, and we’ll have more details in the coming weeks. we’ll be putting the record out ourselves (on our label, SkinnyFat), and we’re pretty sure we’ll be using the compact disk and vinyl formats.

in related news, we’ll be having an album release party on august 25th. more details on that in the near future.

Two shows that are a little sooner:

Thurs Jul 12 Union Hall w/ Tim Fite (part of Union Hall's 1st Anniversary Week)

I like the overhead shots they have been showing of the new stadium. Looks like they have already made a lot of progress.

How come they had to have their only lose in the last twelve games when I was surrounded by Mets fans.

KO!R5 - Sales Pitch

Some reasons you should come to Matchless on Friday:

- Peel's first NYC appearance.

Another band from Austin is playing at Webster Hall on Friday, after a few years of steady touring and shows at tiny venues around Brooklyn and the Lower East Side. Now Peel are coming to NYC for the first time and who knows, maybe they will be the next band to work their way up to Webster Hall and beyond. I for one think they will.

Listen to their WOXY SXSW lounge act.

Stream their amazing self-titled debut album.

- Charles Bissell

Of The Wrens. This sells itself. Pitchfork has news items about The Wrens even when there is no news. Charles' solo set at the White Rabbit was one of the best sets I saw during CMJ last year. And then there's this neat video:

Listen to The Wrens WOXY lounge act.

- In The Attic Of The Universe

Wrap your head around this -> One of the best albums you will hear this year. Download it for FREE here. This show will be the 2nd for the "now full band" The Antlers.

- Get to know Cinema, Cinema

A pattern has been developing at these Knockout shows and the shows I have done with Pop Tarts, where the opening band has upstaged the rest of the bands and impressed the shit out of the early birds. Get to Matchless early and watch as Cinema, Cinema keep this trend going.

Listen to a few songs here and here.

Frauke @ The Charleston - This Sat - June 18

Classy.

Come celebrate Bloomsday and the joy of gelatinous desert treats with Frauke this Saturday, June 16 th, as we play garage rock musics and read absolutely nothing from Joyce's Ulysses.

This go round we will be shredding at the Charleston in Williamsburg, a mysterious venue that after next Saturday will be one of the most famous locations in the entire world.

We can't predict exactly what will happen during our set, but it will be one of these four historic moments: a) Earth's balance of power will shift, b) water will be discovered on Mars, c) the entire population of a small mountain village will develop stigmata or d) a watermelon will be smashed with a giant mallet

Please join us.

History At Our Disposal

Man....I miss cassettes. They were cool. Oh well.

Those of you out there that like some of the more unusual music that I recommend will probably like this. Then again, if you do fall into that category, you probably already know about History At Our Disposal. Here's some PR:

History At Our Disposal is one person, Jason Reimer, from Denton, TX and he his new album is called Symbols In the Architecture on Creative Capitalism. If you're remotely into any of the bands listed below you might want to give Jason's music a shot.

Jason used to play in the Baptist Generals (formerly on Sub Pop) and when he started HaoD several years ago his live show began to garner a reputation for being unpredictable, hinting at bands like Can, Fugazi and Amon Duul. Soon after HaoD was performing with such groups as the 90 Day Men, Daniel Johnston, Paper Chase and American Analog Set. Symbols is the followup to debut LP Novella, and it takes notes from This Heat, Brian Eno, Charles Mingus and Tom Waits, with lyrics embodying mostly Orwellian themes.

Jason has scored a lot of film soundtracks and it shows on this record. He combed through hundreds of hours of mini disc recordings, four track tapes and micro cassette ideas attempting to piece together a cohesive and cinematic selection of music. It's like a Tape Op dream.

Give the songs at their Myspace a listen, or download these:

Letter From the Bottom of the Sea
Nature of Orientation
To the Spoiler the Spoils

Wow. Two posts with mp3s in one day. I'm on a roll.

Aeroplane Pageant - Union Hall Flyer, Mercury
