Baseball News - Jeter, Clemens

Very happy to see that Jeter leads the AL All-Star voting with over 500,000 votes. Somewhat makes up for the disgrace that was Jeter not being invited to the All-star game last year.

Never been a big fan of Clemens. Today, he came out of retirement once again and signed with the Houston Astros. Can the Astros have another incredible run to the playoffs again this year? Doubt it.

Melky Cabrera is the new Robinson Cano (who, btw, leads the voting for AL Second Base). He's not the typical Yankee power outfielder, but he is doing a hell of a job regardless. I hope he keeps it up, now that it looks like Sheffield is going back on the DL.

One thing that always ticks me off is when Yankee haters say that the Yankees have no farm system. Then how do you explain Wang, Cano, Cabrera, and Philips (who has also been impressive), not to mention Jeter, Williams, Posada, and Rivera.

Yankees moved into a tie with Boston with their win last night. Considering all the injuries, I'm pleased with the way the team is playing right now. Even Johnson looked good in his last start.

This Friday: Seaport -> Merc

The Seaport Music Festival begins Friday with the Super Furry Animals & Dead Meadow. Dead Meadow should go on at 7:00pm. The Super Furries maybe around 8:00. Their set will likely end around 9:30/10:00. Also, Andy Votel is DJing at 6:00pm, so you have something to listen to if you get there early to get a good spot up front.

I like that these shows end early, because it leaves plenty of time to go somewhere else afterwards. This is where I will likely be heading to after some Super Furry goodness:

Mercury Lounge - Friday 6/2 - $10

- 11:30 -
MARY TIMONY
- 10:30 -
TRALALA
- 9:30 -
HUMAN TELEVISION
- 8:30 -
TINY AMPS

In Mercland, 9:30 means 10:00, so there might be enough time to get there for Human Television, the band on this lineup that I am most interested in. If you aren't familiar with them, listen to some songs at their Myspace and become a fan. Tralala sounds interesting, and of course, you can listen to them at their Myspace too.

If the Super Furries end too late to catch Human Television, I may go over to the Bowery for CocoRosie.

ps - If you can't make it to the Seaport on Friday and want to see Dead Meadow, they will also be at Galapagos on Saturday at 10:30pm.

Slow / Darts

This past holiday weekend has been quite slow in regards to music news / new tour dates. So until things pick up again, check out this picture:

I did that while playing over the weekend. Heard it's not so uncommon, but hell, I've never done it, or seen anyone else do it. Too bad it wasn't a bull. If it was, would it have counted for two? three? bonus points?

BTW - Jerry has been sending some great Sasquatch photos and info to Brooklynvegan.

Eagle*Seagull

WOXY have been giving songs from this band's self-titled debut album a lot of spins recently and that's a good thing. They are from Nebraska and as of right now the only upcoming dates they have listed are in Nebraska. I have a feeling that this band will be one of the many that will be coming to NYC in the fall. You can listen to three mp3's at their website and another two at their Myspace.

ps. - Eagle*Seagull. Birdmonster. Hmmmm.... are Birds the new Wolves?

Twofers - RCSTA

Bands who's name start with a B and a C seem to like to post free mp3's in pairs.

Cloud Cult - Living on the Outside of Your Skin, Car Crash
Bound Stems - Crimes & Follies, My Kingdom for a Trundle Bed
Crystal Skulls - Baby Boy, The Cosmic Door AND Airport Motel, No Room For Change
Benzos - Glass Souls, It's Amiable
Chin Up Chin Up - We Should Never Have Lived Like We Were Skyscrapers, Virginia Don't Drown

Also, here's the new Forget Cassettes single - The Catch. It Rocks.
And here's an older Forget Cassettes song - Ms. Rhythm and Blues

Mussels / Aeroplane Pageant

Seems like the new question nowadays is "Who is the next Wolf Parade?" Around CMJ last fall, the question was "Who is the next Arcade Fire?", but recently I keep seeing "sounds like Wolf Parade" being used to describe the latest buzz bands.

So I finally got to see Aeroplane Pageant this weekend after about a half dozen unsuccessful attempts. They played mostly songs from their full length which should be out soon. I can't wait to get my hands on it. These guys are really on to something and have a sound that is perfect for the current musical climate. I have a feeling that they are going to make a lot of noise this year at CMJ. If you are diggin Voxtrot you need to check these guys out.

Mussels. wow. They played before Aeroplane Pageant and wow. Here it comes - They sound like Wolf Parade mixed with Built to Spill. I shit you not. I bought their Night Lights EP and it is all that I have been listening to this week. Why doesn't anyone else seem to know about this band???

They don't have any upcoming shows listed on their website as of this post. Where ever they do play next, I will be there. Do yourself a favor and go buy their EP at Insound.

Reminder: Aeroplane Pageant are playing tomorrow night at The Annex at 8:45. Previously, they had the date listed as the 17th, but now it says the 18th on their website and myspace. Here's the full lineup and set times for tomorrow night:

8:00 - The Isles
8:45 - Aeroplane Pageant
9:45 - Stylofone
10:30 - Levy
11:15 - Sound Team

Summer Shows

Schedules are now up for:

Central Park Summerstage 2006
Celebrate Brooklyn
Downtown NYC River to River Festival 2006

Their schedules are still not completely finalized and more shows will be added. However, of the FREE shows that are listed, here are the five that I am most interested in going to:

Fri 06/02 - South Street Seaport - 7:00PM
Super Furry Animals, Dead Meadow, Andy Votel

Fri 6/30 - Prospect Park Bandshell - 6:30PM
TV on the Radio, Matt Pond PA, Voxtrot

Sun 7/2 - Summerstage - 3:00PM
Seu Jorge, Jose Gonzalez, Alex Cuba Band

Thurs 07/13 - Castle Clinton - 7:00PM
Okkervil River

Fri 08/25 - South Street Seaport - 7:00PM
Ted Leo & Rx, DC Snipers

That TVOTR, Matt Pond PA, and Voxtrot show is going to be an absolute ZOO. Should be a blast. Ted Leo at the Seaport is always a good time. I went last year and got a set list. The Super Furries outdoors at the Seaport is going to be surreal.

Aloha - WOXY Lounge Act

Aloha are doing a WOXY Lounge Act this Friday at 11:30am. Here's the updated WOXY Lounge Act schedule:

5/17 Van Hunt 2:00pm
5/18 Murder By Death 1:00pm
5/18 The High Strung 4:00pm
5/19 Aloha 11:30am
5/19 The Sundresses 4:00pm
5/22 The Young Republic 4:00pm

I saw Aloha live recently at Northsix opening for The Appleseed Cast and I was very impressed. The new songs sounded great, but I think that I still like Here Comes Everyone more than their new album, Some Echoes. Listen to a few songs at their Myspace.

BTW, at that same show, the first opening band was Victory at Sea. I was surprised by two things, how great they were and how many people were there to see them. Northsix was more packed with people that (I think) were there to see them then it's been for some headliners that I've seen there. Here's their Myspace.

Benzos - Tiswas 2.0

Benzos' Morning Stanzas was one of my favorite albums of 2005. They are incredible live. Go see them this Saturday at The Annex. Here's the info via the Tiswas 2.0 website:

Saturday 20 May

BENZOS
-- 11:00

New York based BENZOS music is the brainchild of four virtuoso musicians (all music conservatory graduates) who were drawn together in their shared quest to seamlessly blend rock-based musical forms with the ambience and rhythm of early underground dance and experimental electronic music perfectly showcased on their debut album, Morning Stanzas. BENZOS' complex and expansive sound -- at once cerebral and transcendently emotional -- marries drum & bass rhythms with a lush wall of guitars reminiscent of "Meddle"-era Pink Floyd. Among the broad and diverse array of acts whom BENZOS cite as influences are Doves, The Verve, Pink Floyd, Photek, Prefuse 73, Massive Attack, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and even jazz greats Miles Davis, John Coltrane and John McLaughlin.

Silversun Pickups - Carnavas

From their website:

05-09-2006

so there's this record...we finished it...it's a full length...our first...it will be released from captivity on July 25th...we refer to it as CARNAVAS.

~sspu

Finally! Now they have no excuse to get back to the east coast. They're doing a bunch of west coast dates with Elephant up until May 30th. Very much looking forward to seeing them again. One of my most memorable CMJ '05 performances was seeing them at the Fader party. If you haven't seen the video for Kissing Families, check it out in the Media section of their website.

New Amusement Parks on Fire

Two excellent new Amusement Parks on Fire songs at their Myspace, A Star Is Born and In Flight, which will be on their new album Out Of The Angeles. They also have a newly redesigned website. Maybe they'll find some time to come back to the US after their current European tour that ends June 2nd in London and their trip to Japan in August.

Up The Empire

Up The Empire are GREAT.

Only a 4 song EP so far, which you can listen to at their website and at their Myspace. Download their WOXY lounge act for two more songs. Apparently they are putting the finishing touches on their album.

They will be at the Knitting Factory Tap Bar on May 15th. Tix. And there are still spots open for their KEXP performance next week.

Upcoming Aeroplane Pageant Shows

I think it's great that David Bowie is in Aeroplane Pageant's Myspace Top 8. You can also listen to 2 songs there. Here's the dates:

Gomez - WOXY Lounge Act

GOMEZ! WOW! Very short notice on this one. WOXY must have gotten them to agree to do it sometime over the weekend. They will be in the lounge tomorrow at 3:00PM.

Here's their entire list of upcoming Lounge Acts:

5/8 Gomez 3:00pm
5/9 Mason Proper 1:00pm
5/10 Sound Team 4:30pm
5/15 Jason Lytle from Grandaddy 1:00pm
5/17 Van Hunt 2:00pm
5/18 The High Strung 4:00pm
5/19 The Sundresses 4:00pm
5/22 The Young Republic 4:00pm

That Jason Lytle one should be good too.

The new Gomez album is still growing on me. Listen to some new songs at their Myspace.

Permanent Records

Permanent Records is my favorite music shop. If you ever find yourself out on Long Island, I highly recommend stopping by. My CD collection has grown exponentially since this place opened for business a few years ago. Since I don't get to go there as often as I used to, when I do get the chance, I tend to go a little nuts. But it's worth it. I got all this for under $40:

Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger
- Don't know what took me so long to buy this. I've always liked this album. Finally buying it helped me rediscover how great Apply Some Pressure is.

Maritime - We, The Vehicles
- One of the reasons I wanted to make the trip. This album is locked in as a fav of '06.

mcluskyism
- I rarely buy best of albums, but I don't own any of their albums (yet), and I thought that this would hold me over until I get around to buying them.

Cornelius - Point
- Another album that I should have bought a long time ago. BTW - WHEN IS THIS GUY COMING BACK TO THE US???? If you get the chance to see him live, GO! Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to. Maybe Top 3.

Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives EP
- Leading the list of best EP's of 06. I need to see these guys live again, soon.

Randomness

The new The Dears song at their Myspace is fun. Looking forward to their new album, Gang of Losers.

What if Sufjan Stevens and Destroyer were the headliners for Siren 06? Is there any chance that We Are Scientists won't be at Siren this year? If I was able to pick one (realistic) band to play Siren it would be Crystal Skulls.

I'm going to see Radiohead both nights in Montreal and both NYC. That alone is enough to make my year. Finding out that The Black Keys will be opening for those shows more than makes up for Low replacing Supergrass at MSG in '03. I am way too excited.

I wanna go over to see David Blaine die.

Good to see the Yankees finally win a close game, even if it was only the Devil Rays.

More Sound Fix Instores for May

Sound Fix updated their website with more May in-store performances. Art Brut is probably the one that most people are going to be buzzing about, but I can't stand them. Baby Dayliner on May 20th is the one I'm most interested in. BD hooked me up with a demo of his new album, Critics Pass Away, a while ago and it is just as funky as High Heart & Low Estate. Was at Pianos for Benzos Unplugged (which kicked serious ass) and he was doing his dance party right afterward. Haven't seen him live yet, but he is one hell of a DJ and seemed like an all around rad guy. Listen to some of the new songs at his Myspace.

Here's the list of in-stores:

Saturday, May 6, 4pm
Eef Barzeley
The Clem Snide frontman returns to Sound Fix to play some songs from his fine new solo record.

Friday, May 12, 8pm
Alexandra Scott & Les Fleurs Tragiques
Record release party for this delightful chanteuse!

Saturday, May 13, 4pm
The IOs
Exciting new power pop band from Kanine Records.

Sunday, May 14, 4pm
The Old Haunts

Saturday, May 20, 4pm
Baby Dayliner

Monday, May 22, 8pm
Art Brut
No joke! One of the world's most promising new bands stops by to rock the house

Hockey Night - Ummm Pavement?

Just finally got around to checking out Hockey Night's Keep Guessin'. I think it's great. But the first thing I thought, and I'm sure this is quite common, was - Wow, these guys are a Pavement cover band. But then I thought, Who cares? Someone needs to carry the torch. If you can't hear new Pavement songs, then why not real good songs that sound just like Pavement? Regardless of who these guys are ripping off, this album is a winner. Don't know what took me so long to figure that out.

Now I want to go to this:

Mercury Lounge - Sat 5/13 - $10

- 11:30 -
GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY
- 10:30 -
HOCKEY NIGHT
- 9:30 -
PALOMAR

I've heard good things about Ghostland Observatory and Palomar as well.

Listen to Hockey Night at their Myspace, including new songs Dark Trance and Save the Clock Tower (I love that song title)
