Good find. While I'm not a dance-music kind of guy, I'm really liking the album so far.
That said, their performance at the Merge Showcase at SXSW was painful. They tried waaay too hard to be "fun" and dancey on stage, and it was way too forced.
I kinda picked up on a little bit of what you are saying at their recent Union Hall show, but everyone was having so much of a good time, that it wasn't a distraction. I don't blame them for maybe being a little nervous about how their fans are going to react to the dramatic genre shift of the new album and trying to really sell it. Perhaps seeing them in a different venue will alter your experience next time around.
