News From The Antlers / A Brief Smile

Ahoy.

So here's what's happening. I self-released In The Attic Of The Universe for free last March. Since then, via webstats and those lovely torrenting and file hosting folks, it's come to my attention that over 10,000 people have downloaded the album! Not kidding!

Now the good folk at Fall Records will be re-releasing the album on November 6th, and it will come in new packaging (re-designed by Miss Zan Goodman) and re-mastered (by Mr. Shelly Blake-Plock).

The ever-growing band and I will be playing a show to celebrate this re-release, at Piano's on Saturday, November 3rd. Playing on this bill with us will be Bubble/Gum and A Brief Smile.

In further news, I've begun work on the new album, entitled "Hospice". While I'm still playing control-freak on this one, I'll, for the first time, have other people playing on the record. Lots of other people. I'm still working in my amorphous home studio, but will be transporting it all over the place. I can't really say when it will be done, but hopefully before the new year. Here's a picture:

I'm not surprised by the 10,000 downloads thing. My post about his/their album is still getting several hits on a daily basis. If you haven't heard In The Attic Of The Universe yet, well, what are you waiting for????

I highly recommend being at Pianos on Sat Nov 3, and not just for The Antlers. Go for A Brief Smile too. ABS have just recently sent over their new album and I like it a lot. Go stream Now We All Have Horns. I bet you will like it too. And check out what The Sluts and Underrated Rachael have to say about it. ABS are having a record release party @ Midway on Thurs Oct 4.

What The F@&k Is Fred Savage Doing In Here?

Thanx again to Steve for the heads up.

Danny DeVito & The Contract

Also thanx to Steve for reminding me about The National's WOXY lounge act:

The National
Performed September 24, 2007

Hometown boys The National have been touring pretty much nonstop since the release of "Boxer" earlier this Spring. When they hit town over the weekend for a performance at the Madison Theatre, we got Matt and Aaron to drop by for a stripped down set.

In the interview, Shiv talks to the guys about their travels and the process of recording the new album. You'll hear 2 songs from "Boxer" in the performance as well as a b-side that originally surfaced on the "Lit Up" single.

Track Listing:
Apartment Story
You've Done It Again, Virginia

And as for tomorrow, the show has transformed from a full KO showcase to an afterparty of sorts. Once the Chemical Brothers wrap up across the street @ the pool, the music will start up @ Matchless. That Fleeting World and Family Lumber will be providing the live action and Jeff and Keith of Merry Swankster will be spinning. There may also be one more band TBA. See you there.

Mussels & Life In Bed @ Union Hall - This Thurs

Somehow I managed to see Mussels @ Gramercy/Blender last week, in the middle of one of the crazier weeks I've had in a while. Mussels were so so great. Gramery is kinda weird and the NYU crowd was in full effect, but the band sounded fantastic and appeared to make a bunch of new fans. It's been a while since I last saw Life In Bed. Union Hall two nights in a row????

Bridges and Powerlines, Square Wave, Lisps

Recently I posted a track off of Bridges and Powerlines newly completed LP, that apparently has been named Ghost Types. Now this week they have posted three more tracks on their Myspace and they are also excellent. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album, which unfortunately will not be available until '08, but these tracks are definitely keeping me happy for now. The band have a busy September starting next Sat with the next Hot Rocks! party. After that they hit the road for a mini-tour that ends at Lit Lounge on Sat Sept 29. Here are all the dates:

Sat Sept 15 - The Delancey - hot rocks party! w/ man in gray, alderbarton info
Wed Sept 26 - ABC Tavern (Harrisburg, PA) w/ creeping weeds
Thurs Sept 27 - Soapbox (Wilmington, NC) w/ can joann, swede
Fri Sept 28 - The Cave (Chapel Hill, NC) w/ can joann, citified
Sat Sept 29 - Lit Lounge w/ square wave punch, two if by sea, sky drops

Speaking of Square Wave Punch, I meant to post a heads up yesterday about the great cross poll show that Underrated Rachael curated @ Pianos last night, featuring Square Wave Punch and another one of my favs, The Lisps, but wasn't able to. Wish I could have gone to that one, which I'm sure was a lot of fun. Square Wave Punch also have a show TOMORROW NIGHT @ Matchless. Set times:

8pm The Johns
9pm Swoon
10pm Twice As Bright
11pm Square Wave Punch

As for The Lisps, they will be playing at Hudson River Park on Tues Sept 25 w/ Agent Ribbons. Also, some news:

So after a very intense summer of recording, we Lisps have emerged from the woods with a brand new album! Thirteen tracks of Lispy madness!

We finished mixing last night and are super excited.
It won't be in the shrink wrap till october but we've posted 3 new mp3s.

Also we've set the the live recording of documents as downloadable so grab it before it goes away.

Go to their Myspace to listen to the new songs.

Club NME Night @ The Annex - Tomorrow - 9/6

Not familiar with Death Of Fashion, but I do know Setting Sun and so should you.

Like Spinning Plates / Fan Made Videos

This is sort of a companion post to Bunkre Scott's recent post re: this video that is either a fan made video for "Like Spinning Plates", or an art project that just happens to use "Like Spinning Plates" as it's soundtrack.

Scott posted this video as part of an ongoing exposé of sorts on light painting (and because he is a big Radiohead fan). I am posting it as part of an ongoing phenomenon of fan made videos, which as I mentioned in Scott's comments, the Subterranean blog posted about recently (and because I am a big Radiohead fan). I also mentioned that I LOVE this fan made video for "And It Rained All Night" that I posted a while back.

These Rosebuds fan made videos are also worth checking out.

"Right now, the Yankees are in the playoffs"

Even though it wasn't as exciting as it could have potentially been, it was pretty great to watch the Yankees complete the sweep of the sox at the stadium last Thursday. I was sitting way up in the right field upper deck, which, if you have been to a few Yankees/sox games you know, is where all the sox fans who come down from Boston sit. The Ramirez, Ortiz, and Damon(wtf???) jersey wearers were all very quiet. And even though they had a 5 game cushion, the nervousness was palpable. And the nervousness was not re: the division, but more about possibly facing the Yankees in the playoffs. Go Cleveland! Get that better record than the Angels. It's been nice being able to say "Right now, the Yankees are in the playoffs" the past few days.

And another thing about those terrible seats (well, actually, no Yankees/sox seats are "terrible") last Thursday - at least we had a decent view of the new stadium, which is coming together fast. It looks like the entire framework is in place. Here's a pic:

The seats we had for the recent Jets/Vikings preseason game were much better:

Last night's Yankee game was a fun one too. Bring on the September call ups! In the 8th, I think that every Mariner on the field was a call up. 4 players had their first major league at bat last night: Wladimir Balentien, Rob Johnson, and Jeff Clement for Seattle and Alberto González for the Yankees.

BTW - for all of you also watching YES on Cablevision - are you as sick as I am of those god damn Verizon FIOS commercials with that demonic little kid? I feel like a little part of me dies inside everytime I see them. Gack.

So tonight would be a good time for Hughes to earn his pinstripes. I want that nice, comfy three game lead over Seattle. Go squirrel!

One more thing - The Nittany Lions started off their '07 season with a good win this past weekend and moved up a little bit in the rankings. Love to see it. Shame about that other Big Ten team's loss this past weekend. You hate to see that. :p Penn State's game against the Fighting Irish this weekend should be a good one. Looking forward to it. WE ARE....

Update: Forgot to mention all of the cool shirts I have seen recently, one of my favorites being "Joba the Hutt" on the front and "...in a bullpen far, far away" on the back. Also saw a guy wearing a Duncan shirt. I couldn't even believe that they were making those yet. I need to get me one, especially after that nice throw that Shelley just made, getting Ibanez at second.

Mark Your Calenders

Sorry that there has not been much posting here recently. There's been lots of working, Yankee game attending, Labor Day weekending, and......... show organizing!

Now that summer is *officially* over, even though it still feels very summery outside, I have begun working on the KNOCKOUT shows again.

But before I get to that -> I am very excited for my first dj gig in a long, long time. My friends over at Neon Lights have asked me to provide the background music for their next show, which as I have previously mentioned, will be at Union Hall on Fri Sept 21. I can not wait! BTW - The Most Serene Republic have launched a new website today. Check it out. Neon Lights flyer and details:

NEON LIGHTS PRESENTS announces our return to Union Hall, following a victorious two night stand in July (Ola Podrida, De Novo Dahl). In an effort to top ourselves, we've brought in a secret Canadian weapon, THE MOST SERENE REPUBLIC. The Ontario seven-piece were the first group signed to the Broken Social Scene's Arts and Crafts label that weren't a direct off-shoot of BSS themselves. The lovely expansive pop sound of their upcoming sophomore release, Population, will place the band on the level of their celebrated countrymen like Stars or Metric. Joining MSR will be hotly tipped Brooklyn newcomers, HIGH PLACES and SHE KEEPS BEES. The sweet melodies and alien instrumentation of HIGH PLACES have earned the duo Pitchfork love letters and an opening spot on the Blow's upcoming Northeast tour. The spooked songwriting and soulful voice of SHE KEEPS BEES' Jennifer Larrabee have garned favorable comparisons to Fiona Apple or the early work of Chan Marshall. Between sets, music will be lovingly selected by our fellow blogging /concert promoting guest DJ's, Justin and Nghia from CRACKER'S UNITED/FRICTION and Chris from THE BATTERING ROOM/KNOCKOUT

And then, the following day, the next KNOCKOUT - Round 6 @ Matchless. An excellent 'unofficial' afterparty option for Brooklynbretta. Bands TBA VERY SOON.

In October, there's my 2nd Annual CMJ preparty happening on 10/13 @ Matchless, details for which will be posted soon. I'm also working on a day show in the LES sometime during CMJ.

And believe it or not, I also have something up my sleeve for November. KNOCKOUT Round 7 @ Matchless on Sat Nov 10 with the amazing BY THE END OF TONIGHT. That's right folks. Seriously.

Stay tuned....
