Alamo Race Track @ The Annex - This Thurs - 8/2

I'm very happy to see all of the US buzz for Alamo Race Track. Also, via Filter:

"Black Cat John Brown is quickly approaching "Young Folks"-sized ubiquity (...) A solid but confounding album of terse pop and wild-eyed indie rock largely overshadowed by the three and a half minuts of quirky gravel road blues that overshadowes it. "

Completely agree. Was rocking out to Black Cat John Brown (the song AND the album) again today. ART are playing at Club NME night Thursday w/ The 1990's, who's album I was rocking out to yesterday. And WAS are djing. Needless to say, I strongly reco heading over to The Annex Thurs night. Reposting this video, because it is really, really great:

Very. Exciting.

Forget about any music related event. This is sure to be the hottest ticket in town next summer. Strings will be pulled all over the place.

Looks like the sox are getting Gagne. Meanwhile, subtract one Proctor and add another. Whoopty do. But I do not want to see any rash trades now that the farm system has a pulse agan. The Indians are tripping a little and the wild card is still within reach. Mid August will decide the Yanks October.

Could A-Rod just hit his 500th tonight so we can move on. This distraction needs to go away.

Also - Russo put his stamp of approval on The Bronx Is Burning and after a few episodes, I am still liking it too. And Chris has got a good point. Gagne to the sox is better than Gagne to the Indians.

Update: Well...the Yanks tied a franchise record for most homeruns in a game tonight (8), but no 500 for A-Rod.

New Maritime - Guns Of Navarrone

Reading the 'gum's post about the new Maritime song made me think about how cool Flameshovel is for requiring their bands to do the floating in mid-air pic.

Maritime:

Labelmates Bound Stems:

It's also further proof that The Aliens and Architecture in Helsinki should be on Flameshovel:

The Aliens:

New AIH video for "Hold Music":

And oh yeah, I like Maritime's new song too.

Speaking of Bound Stems, also over at the 'gum there is a post about the upcoming Huey Lewis compilation, which will feature some of my favs including Bound Stems, Apostle Of Hustle, Travels, The Long Winters, and Oh No! Oh My!. So rad. Check the Myspace.

Modeselektor Feat. Thom Yorke - The White Flash

Thanx to M for pointing me in the right direction. This song is excellent and sounds like it could have been an above par b-side to The Eraser. Love it.

The Most Serene Republic - Population

Sean beat me too it. Hey Amanda - I loved the first album too.

And the EP. And there is no doubt that I will love this one too.

"Sherry And Her Butterfly Net" - mp3

You can also listen at their Myspace.

Things are getting exciting. First Crystal Skulls. And now TMSR. Just like last year after Siren, I am now shifting my CMJ coverage into high gear. Those two better be there! Population is out in October. I'd say it's a given that they will be in NYC in mid-Oct.

Siren '07

Before I get some much needed rest, some Siren thoughts:

* Best non-music related occurrence - the weather. I have no problem dealing with heat when there is no humidity on a sunny day. That is what makes Coachella tolerable. And there was a nice breeze too. First time at Siren that I have seen the fans on stage turned off. Only thing that could have made the weather better -> a late day misting like we got during Spoon a couple years ago.

* The 1/2 hour main stage delay was only a bummer on one occasion. The Twilight Sad -> White Rabbits. We were digging TTS, who we were seeing for the first time, and we had just recently witnessed a top-notch WR performance at Bowery, so we stayed at the main for the entire TTS set. Immediately after TTS we bolted over to Stillwell, but were only able to catch one WR song. Fortunately, that song was "The Plot", my favorite, so it wasn't a total loss.

* Legen ... wait for it ... dary. That is not a term that I use liberally. In fact, before now, I believe that I have only used it once here at The Pummeling Den. I still stand by that declaration, just as I stand by this declaration - Matt & Kim's set was legendary. Musically, the set was no better than, and perhaps even slightly less impressive than, their set at Bowery. It was the intangibles that made this set one for the record books. M&K were out of their minds on the natural high of their biggest, most important show to date and the crowd ate it up. Matt pointing out where the fans were and coaxing a barrier crash. Being in the midst of complete pandemonium the likes of which I had never seen at any of the previous Sirens I have attended. It was one of those sets, where immediately afterwards, everyone is looking around at each other, silently acknowledging that they had just experienced something special. Something legendary.

* Voxtrot was very strange. I have seen other bands, like TL&Rx for instance, go from very small stages playing in front of few to very large stages in front of many, but none of those shows felt like this. During their set, Ramesh talked about the Rothko show, which I, and a handful of others attended. And now they were playing 2nd to last on Stillwell (IMHO, way more impressive than opening at Prospect). It felt very surreal. I think the band thought so too.

* Stuck to the plan the entire day (and threw in Noisettes for good measure) and was very pleased with the results. Elvis Perkins was delightful. The Black Lips were... interesting. And Cursive deserved to be the Stillwell headliners.

* Broke the tradition of a Nathans hot dog and the cyclone after the show, due to some sudden stomach unpleasantness. But it's OK, because Daft Punk (which, btw - is now SOLD OUT) will be bringing me back to Coney in less than three weeks!!

Orphan Code - Last Dance Video

Posted about Orphan Code a while back. In case you missed it, check this. These guys were very close to coming to the US last month to play some shows, including KO!R5, but it fell through last minute. However, I will not be denied and I promise you that they will be here to perform for you soon. Just like the skulls, fingers crossed for CMJ.

In the meantime, here's a brand new video for "Last Dance". Enjoy!

Hot Rocks - Reminder - This Fri - July 20

Get pumped with a new Frauke song:

Canadian Girlfriend - mp3

Here's a review of the song via the USSR music magazine, Approved Entertainment for Soviet Comrade Listening, which was reprinted in the June 1973 issue of Rolling Stone:

Let's put it simply: Frauke's newly recorded song, "Canadian Girlfriend," is set to be a summer classic. It tells the tale of a glorious summer romance that happened on the beach…OR DOES IT?!? Maybe it's all just a lie fabricated by a nerdy, friendless loser, who's such a cad that even his own fantasy rejects him.

Let's take a deeper, in-depth look at this absolutely amazing song that has all the critics and kids and highly intelligent animals talking:

-boy
-girl
-beach
-Canada
-giant crabs
-Arctic tundra
-identity
-Pop Rocks

Gustav Mahler and the Rolling Stones once sang, "It's over now, it's a summer romance, and it's through." So it seems to be the case for the narrator of this song. Except sadder still, the romance may have never even existed and he is no doubt in for a long life of existential self-doubt and habitual masturbation.

And yet for all the heartbreak and woe, Frauke – the mysterious band who hails from Brooklyn – has managed to create one of the most uplifting, and definitely one of the catchiest songs of the moment. Actually, that is an understatement, for it is perhaps the catchiest song in the history of all time forever infinite eternity .

Beat Radio - CD Release Party - Sat Aug 11

It's official. The first "full" week of August 2007 is the next week of full throttle indie-rock insanity in NYC. There is already way, way too much going on that week and it just keeps piling up. Already I have had to make some hard choices (Beastie Boys vs. Daft Punk), but as of right now it looks like this:

Thurs Aug 9 - Daft Punk @ Keyspan
Fri Aug 10 - The Thermals @ Maxwells
Sun Aug 12 - TL&Rx, Thermals @ the pool

And now this has been thrown into the mix. On Sat Aug 11, Beat Radio are having a CD release party at Union Hall for their spectacular and highly praised debut album, The Great Big Sea, which was one of my favorite albums of 2006. Up until this point, the album has only been available in mp3 format as a free download at their website. So why would you now purchase a CD of the album? Well, because the CD comes with their brand new, 4-song Miracle Flag EP.

The Bloodsugars are also playing with Beat Radio on the 11th, so yeah, this show is going to be the bees knees.

Crystal Skulls - Not Broken Up!?!?!

It has been a long, long, long time since there has been any news from Crystal Skulls. In fact, there hasn't been any news for as long as The Battering Room has been in existence. No CMJ '06. No SXSW '07. No news from Suicide Squeeze. No updates at their Myspace. And their website disappeared all together. The band had vanished so completely, that I was afraid they had broken up.

Until now.

A show has been posted at their Myspace.

Sat Aug 11 @ The Crocodile Cafe in Seattle w/ Pale Pacific and Kevin of The Wrens.

If I lived in Seattle, there is no question where I would be on 8/11.

One show isn't much, but it's more than the nothing that Crystal Skulls fans have had to endure for a long time now. Let hope that this is the beginning of a whole lot more from the band. Still plenty of time between now and mid-October. Fingers crossed for CMJ '07.

Citysol Pics

Had a very nice time hanging out at Citysol this past Saturday. The weather could not have been more perfect. Got there near the end of These Are Powers and left near the end of Land Of Talk. I was worried that the venue was going to be over crowded, but it seemed to be just the right size. A very interesting mix of the usual faces, over-the-top hipsters, wedding guests, and people who just happened to be passing by and stopped to see what was going on. The Besnard Lakes were my favorite. OCDJ was a close second. First time seeing O'Death and LOT, both of which were enjoyable. Good job Solar 1 and BV for putting together a fun little festival. Jules and I finally remembered to bring the camera out to a show this summer and took lots of pics. Here are some of the better shots (that look much better when you click them):

Botany Bay

Botany Bay is Eric of The Secret Life Of SoFia's side project. Eric sent me a five song demo the other day, which I can't seem to stop listening to. Instead of the upbeat pop of TSLOS, Botany Bay's songs are mellow and dreamy. Fans of Earlimart, Metal Hearts, and quieter Death Cab would love this. You can listen to all five songs at Myspace.

Botany Bay had their live debut at one of the Neon Lights shows last weekend, but I was unable to go and they currently do not have any other upcoming shows. I might have to take matters into my own hands.

Speaking of The Secret Life of Sofia, they have posted a great new song, "Untitled aka F Song", at their Myspace. They also have two local shows coming up(!):

Tues July 17 - Annex w/ Domino, Secret History, The States
Wed Aug 8 - Union Hall w/ The Dry Spells & Inlets

Set times for the show next Tues:

8p The Secret Life of Sofia
9p the states
10p Secret History
11p domino

Let's Keep It Up

Badass. Flickr rules.

An encouraging win for the Yankees tonight and a good way to start off the second half and get back to .500. The big guys (A-Rod, Abreu) did what they are supposed to do, hit home runs. And it's always nice to see Jeter hit one out. Posada continues to have a career year. I also love seeing the young guys play well. Not that it's much to brag about, but Melky has recently proven himself to be a master of the bunt. And Phillips extended his hitting streak to 7 games. As has been pointed out all over the place, the Yankees have a weak schedule from here on. If they play the rest of the season (on the road, in particular) the same way that they played tonight, there is no reason that they shouldn't be in the hunt for a playoff spot. Especially now that the starting pitching has started to come around. Well, except for Igawa. He is still terrible. Patiently awaiting the return of Hughes, which should be soon.

Citysol - Flyer & Set times

If all goes according to plan, I will be at the seaport tomorrow night for Menomena (!!) before heading over to Mercury for the (MIND EXPLOSION) lineup that begins with The Muggabears and ends with The Besnard Lakes. Also plan on getting to Solar 1 on Saturday in time for These Are Powers and staying there through Land Of Talk. After that I have to head over to MSG. Here's the flyer:

And finally we have set times for Saturday:

Frankpollis 1:30
The Budos Band 2:30
These Are Powers 3:30
OCDJ 4:30
O'Death 5:30
The Besnard Lakes 6:30
Land Of Talk 7:30
Les Savy Fav 8:30

Radiohead Are In NYC

Holy shit! It's true. They really are here.

I saw some rumblings yesterday about them hanging out with Spoon at HiFi on Tuesday, but dismissed it as nonsense. But it turns out that in fact they actually are here, mastering LP7. Check out the king left's post over at Atease. Photographic evidence:

My two cents: Spoon would be a perfect opener for the next Radiohead tour.

Internet Radio Needs Your Help TODAY

Via Savenetradio.org:

Yesterday, the U.S. Court of Appeals DENIED the emergency stay sought on behalf of webcasters, millions of listeners and the artists and music they support.

UNLESS CONGRESS ACTS BY JULY 15th, it's going to be the end of the road for Internet radio as you know it.

We are appealing to the millions of Internet radio listeners out there, the webcasters they support and the artists and labels to rise up and make your voices heard before this vibrant medium is silenced.

This situation is grave, but that makes the message all the simpler and most serious. CALL YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES TODAY and urge them to support the "Internet Radio Equality Act." If they've already co-sponsored, thank them and tell them to fight to bring it to the floor for an immediate vote. If the line is busy, call back. Call until you know your voice has been heard. Your voices are what have gotten us this far -- Congress has listened. Now, they are the only hope.

Click here to get contact info for your Congressional representatives

We are outmatched by lobbying power and money but we are NOT outmatched by facts and passion and the power of our voices.

It's getting down to the wire. I just called my senators and congressmen. If you enjoy internet radio as much as I do I strongly suggest you do the same.

Film & TV Thoughts - Tues July 10

Have you seen the trailer for There Will Be Blood yet? I cannot wait to see this movie. One of, if not thee, best directors of our generation and one of, if not thee, best actors of our generation. Hype!

I finally got around to watching The Good Shepard, and I gotta say that it is one of the best movies that I have seen in recent memory. I didn't even mind how long it was because I was wrapped up in the story the entire time. I've heard complaints from people who say that the story jumps around too much and that it's hard to follow, but I thought that the flashbacks were very interesting (especially the Skulls stuff) and were handled well and I had no problem keeping up with the main story line. I do agree with the critics who said that they could have increased the budget for the makeup department. I saw the twist coming, but it was still incredibly suspenseful and the ending was perfect. Most of all, I thought that the casting was impeccable, so naturally the acting was exceptionally strong. And of course, the history behind the creation of the CIA was also quite intriguing. Two thumbs way up.

Also due to my fascination with all things Spy, I have checked out a little bit of Burn Notice and it is just not a very good show at all. The only redeeming factor is the involvement of Mr. Campbell. As always, he rules. Bubba Ho-Tep!

I tried to stay wake as long as possible last night to watch The Bronx Is Burning, but I ended up falling asleep about halfway through. Good thing you can now watch the entire episode at the website. Everything that I saw before passing out looked great and Jason Giambi as the cabbie was hysterical. I'll probably try to watch the entire series. I especially liked Loren Dean as Fran Healy, considering I'm a HUGE Mumford Files fan.

I am officially hooked on Rescue Me. That is all.

I don't even know what to think of this whole 1-18-08 business. The NYC disaster scenes are kind of been there done that. If the "parasite" ends up being a smoke monster I'm gonna puke. Stereogum has some more info.

Finally, head over to Productshop for some Knocked Up deleted scenes.

Download The New Stars Album - TODAY

Download Stars' new album, In Our Bedroom After War, right now here. CD and vinyl won't be in stores until September.

Long winded explanation via A&C:

Friends, fans and supporters of Stars... 2007-07-10

On September 25th, Arts&Crafts will release Stars' fourth studio album, In Our Bedroom After War.

We love it and are excited and proud to be bringing it to the world.

We enlisted Joe Chiccarelli to mix the album. He finished in early June, passing the tapes along to Emily Lazar at the Lodge for mastering. Last Friday, July 6th, a final master was delivered to us.

Traditional music business practice says we are to begin sending out copies of this album now. We give advance copies to print publications in hopes of securing features that coincide with our September date. We meet with radio stations in hopes of securing airplay. etc, etc.

Inevitably someone will leak the album.

Throughout this process, the most important people in this value chain, the fans, are given only two options - wait until September 25th to legally purchase the new album or choose from a variety of sources and download the album for free, at any time.

We hope you'll choose to support the band, and choose to pay for their album. However we don't think it's fair you should have to wait until September 25th to do so.

We believe that the line between the media and the public is now completely grey.
What is the difference between a writer for a big glossy music magazine and a student writing about their favourite bands on their blog? What differentiates a commercial radio station from someone adding a song to their lastfm channel? or their myspace page?

As such, we are making the new Stars album available for legal download today, four days after it's completion. The CD and double vinyl versions of the album will still be released on our official release date, September 25th. We hope you will continue to support music retailers should a physical album in all it's packaged glory be your choice of format.

It's our hope that given a clear, legal alternative to downloading music for free, you will choose to support the creators.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Sincerely,

Stars and Arts&Crafts

Band Of Horses Pool Party - Sun July 22

Rumor no more. Commentor Kelly points out how Sub Pop has revealed who is playing at the Sun July 22 Pool Party -> Band Of Horses. JellyNYC still says "SPECIAL LINE UP TO BE ANNOUNCED".

Update: Annuals are opening.

Siren Fest '07 - Schedule

The Siren schedule turned out better than I expected.

The Twilight Sad -> White Rabbits -> Elvis Perkins -> booze reload / lunch -> The Black Lips -> WAS (maybe, might just head over to Stillwell for a nice spot for the rest of the day, starting with...) -> Matt & Kim -> Voxtrot -> Cursive

Get to see just about everyone I want to see and don't have to hear a note of M.I.A. = Horray!

Unrelated/Awesome: The new Prof Murder single that Pitchfork are streaming is b-ang-ing. Song of the day.

Related/Awesome: Insound are having their annual Siren pre-party on Wed July 18 @ Union Pool. The Narrator, My Teenage Stride, Chase Pagan, and The XYZ Affair (who's video I posted today here) are playing. More details TBA.

And don't forget about The Creature's killer post-party.

Early July Video Roundup

Watch em. Enjoy em. Trade em with your friends.

...music video?

Been listening to ...music video? a lot today. Judging by the amount of Myspace friends this guy's got, he is fairly well known, although I have just found out about him. Reminds me of Cassettes Won't Listen, whereas I like both his remix/mashups and his original material. I hope he leaves Arizona sometime soon and makes his way to NYC.

Also, dude really likes his Lite-brite.

JellyNYC Attempt To Quell Band Of Horses Rumor

Interesting... JellyNYC sent out a Myspace bulletin re: Band of Horses titled "To quell down any rumors....", and yet at no point do they actually address the rumor that BOH are playing the Pool Party on the 22nd.

Ok.

Well anyway, here's the bulletin, which is actually about the very cool next New York Magazine New York by New York event:

Band of Horses is playing an event for our friends at New York Magazine and it's hosted by everyone's favorite bearded comedian Zach Galifinakas.

Here's the details:

We are pleased to announce our next New York by New York production, the
"Bad Art Auction." It's on July 10th at the Hiro Ballroom, and it might
be our craziest event yet.

We convinced Zach Galifianakis to put together a collection of
offensive, terrible, crappy, terrific artwork and then auction it off -
as a benefit for New York Cares (www.nycares.org). After the auction,
Band of Horses will play a full set - currently their only scheduled
performance in NYC this Summer. We're only selling a few hundred tickets
for the event, so you might want to act fast on grabbing your tickets -
available over here: www.nymag.com/nyxny

The Facts:
July 10, 8:00 PM
HIRO Ballroom, 363 West 16th street
$30 tickets available online at www.nymag.com/nyxny

Is that it: Nope, a 46 issue New York magazine subscription is included
with each ticket purchase

So about that Pool Party on the 22nd????

42nd Street Kwik-E-Mart

Stopped by this morning. Because this 7-11 is on 42nd street, the transformation obviously wasn't as extensive as this one, but it was still pretty cool.

mmmmmmm.....free donut. It was quite tasty.

They were all out of Krusty O's (more being delivered at 6PM tonight), but there was plenty of Buzz. Bought a can for 99 cents.

5:00 Voxtrot
4:00 Matt & Kim
3:00 Noisettes
2:00 Elvis Perkins

5:30 The Black Lips
4:30 Dr. Dog
3:30 Lavender Diamond

Let's see how close I am.

When Ivan Met Hakeem

Just got a good chuckle reading this over at The Rosebuds Myspace:

Ivan Enters 2008 NBA Draft!!!

We were in Whole Foods in Houston recently and Matt came up to Ivan and said, "Man, you have to go to the produce section right now. It will change your life." Ivan's first thought was, "There must be a huge, seedless watermelon sculpture over there!" Watermelon is Ivan's favorite thing and a sculpture... I'm sure that WOULD be lifechanging for him.

It was actaully Hakeem the Dream. Ivan introduced himself and talked to Hakeem for a little while, but not too long. Later, in the van, we said, "How was it!?" and Ivan said, "I've never been star struck in my life but, that was Hakeem the Dream! Do you know what I'm saying!? I had to talk to him." Everybody went on for a little while about what they thought of Hakeem and, at length, we all agreed that not only is he a legendary player, he's also a gentle giant.
It got quiet for a little while and then Ivan said, "Meeting him in there made me realize something... I could have dominated in the NBA."

Everybody thought that was great. We all laughed because, Hakeem is choosing oranges and Ivan's sizing him up.
I pointed out that Hakeem is HUGE. Ivan said, "Yeah, but I've played guys like that before. I played Erik Dampier who is big like that and those guys, you can go right up under them." He said, "I sized him up in there and I know I'm a good enough athlete to play at that level."

So, America, we are hoping you will do everything you can to help get the word out about Ivan entering the draft for next year. The Bowery Ballroom knee injury should be heeled by then and, if not, just another conversation topic for the guys over at Sports Center.

In other news, Ivan finally got a seedless watermelon today.

Two sports related posts in one day!?!?!?!?!

Thoughts?

It's not looking good. Can anything be done?

Mussels - WOXY Lounge Act (!!!!!)

Holy crap! It's actually going to happen! Mussels are traveling out to Cincy later this month for a Lounge Act. YES YES YES! Have you bought Little Voices yet??? What are you waiting for? / You are awesome! (Depending on your response) And Forget Cassettes are also going to be back in the WOXY lounge. The upcoming schedule is just getting better and better:

7/5 Minus Story 1:30pm
7/5 Tacks, The Boy Disaster 4:00pm
7/13 Forget Cassettes 4:00pm
7/20 Dirty On Purpose 1:30pm
7/25 Ra Ra Riot 4:00pm
7/27 Mussels 1:00pm
7/27 The Sharp Things 4:30pm
8/3 Wussy 3:00pm
8/17 The Rentals 12:30pm

Hot IQs are in the lounge today at 2PM. I missed Palomar's Lounge Act last week, but just downloaded it. Good stuff. And now I know why they were at KO!R5. I thought maybe it was just that they thought I was cool. Silly me. Via WOXY:

Palomar
Performed June 27, 2007

This Brooklyn 4-piece band gave one of the very earliest performances in our Lounge back in 2004 when they were promoting "Palomar III."

Now, they have a new home with Misra Records and were out on the road touring their fourth full-length disc "All Things, Forests" when they stopped in for a return visit to our studios.

Pool Party Post

So...yesterday's pool party completely rocked. Entering to the marching band sounds of What Cheer Brigade was surreal. The plentiful choices of Brooklyn beer was splendid (we stuck with the Summer Ale). People watching / dodgeball watching during Illinois was relaxing. Chicken sausage and pirogie consumption during Dengue Fever was delicious. And then Man Man proved fully and completely that they are a headliner. Not as awe-inspiring as their set at the Spiegeltent last summer, but just as high energy and face blasting. The crowd wasn't going crazy where we were standing, but it looked like a war zone just a few yards away. I can't wait to go back! Here's what's happening this Sunday:

This just in: Illinois will be playing at the next Friction on Sat Aug 18 w/ OFFICE and The Teeth. Just slightly more intimate.

Update: Looks like Illinois are out. But Bell are in!

Black Moth Super Rainbow @ Seaport This Friday

So it looks like Ulrich Schnauss is no longer opening for Fujiya & Miyagi at the Seaport this Fri July 6. Instead, bzzzzzzzzing buzz band Black Moth Super Rainbow are opening. I give this lineup two thumbs way up. BMSR's new album Dandelion Gum has been getting lots of spins round these parts. Stream it here. Or listen to some tunes at their Myspace. Or download these:

Forever Heavy
Sun Lips
The Afternoon Turns Pink

BMSR are also doing an instore at Sound Fix on Sat Aug 18. Also on 8/18, they will be playing at Aladdin Garden Party, whatever the hell that is. After that, they go off on tour with The Flaming Lips.
