WOXY - The End

Just about the worst music related news since the death of Kurt Cobain. This is absolutely tragic.

Thank you so much WOXY for being my primary source for new music for the past few years.

Listeners, fans and friends,

This sucks.

This is the moment all of us hoped would never come. After plugging away at this for the past two years, it’s become pretty clear that operating woxy.com as a stand-alone Internet "radio station" is not going to cut it. Our operating costs are higher than you might think, and the revenue we were able to generate from advertising isn’t close to supporting what we’re doing. Even membership revenue wasn’t enough to get us there. When your business doesn’t make money, you eventually go out of business.

With this in mind, we’ve been looking for either a significant partner – someone with a larger plan into which woxy.com could be plugged – or an outright buyer. That search hasn’t been fruitful. We’re still willing to entertain offers and explore possibilities (email bryan@woxy.com), but our time is short. We thought it was time to share our situation with you ... to give you a heads-up.

You might be saying, "What can I do to help?" Unfortunately, unless you have significant investment capital and a way to profit from the wonderful programming we create, you can’t. As of today, we will no longer be selling or renewing memberships or accepting contributions. Please don’t send us money ... it will just mean we have to send it back to you.

Now is a good time to say THANK YOU to our incredibly patient, generous and kind angel investors. Without them ... well, we wouldn’t have had the chance to even be in the game. They’ve enabled everything we’ve accomplished over the past two years, and for that, they are saints to indie rock lovers everywhere.

We did investigate an alternative: stripping our operations to the absolute bare minimum by cutting back to one staffer, no more DJs, no more Lounge Acts, etc. We decided it wasn’t worth it. It wouldn’t have been true to what woxy.com is, and it wouldn’t have honored the legacy of 97X.

While woxy.com may have failed in a business sense, we’re pretty proud that we managed to put out some of the most passionate, unique and interesting programming on the Internet and elsewhere. We showered love and airplay on countless bands who otherwise would have received none, garnered national press attention and hosted nearly 200 live Lounge Act performances. Not too bad for a little, four-person Internet radio station from Cincinnati.

A radio station is only as big as its listeners make it. We’re not BS-ing when we say that you guys, our supporters, are the most amazing people on the planet. THANK YOU. The dedication and enthusiasm you’ve shown for what we do is staggering and inspiring. Thank you to everyone who stepped up to become a member, generously made a contribution, emailed (spammed) your friends, spread the gospel of woxy.com and – most of all – listened.

Barring something exceptional happening in the next two weeks, we will silence our broadcasts on Friday, September 15th.

Sometimes no matter how hard you try and how special the thing you do, it simply isn’t enough to beat the odds. It’s the cold reality of business that not even we could escape. When September 15th comes, we’ll meet it proudly with heads held high and celebrate the past two years of woxy.com and the spirit of 97X. For those lucky enough to have been part of it, The Future of Rock and Roll will forever be in our minds and hearts.

So enjoy these last two weeks with us. Shall we rock?

Eternally yours,

Bryan Jay, Mike, Shiv and Barb

Here's to keeping hope alive that WOXY will survive some how some way.

I just noticed another exciting Mercury Lounge CMJ event: Tokyo Police Club - Fri Nov 3.

And yeah, like Jerry said, in the past, Mercury Lounge has not sold advance tickets for CMJ shows.

Together. At Grasslands in Brooklyn. Sat Oct 7.

Almost as great a pairing of bands as Bound Stems / Maritime at Mercury Lounge.

Tokyo Police Club, TL & Rx, Beirut

All in one night.

Finally got to see Tokyo Police Club for the first time last night, opening for Ted Leo & Rx at the seaport. Pat's got some video. Enjoyed their set, even though the crowd was quite sucky. Wish I could have see these guys for the first time somewhere smaller, oh well. Two upcoming NYC dates, one at Old Volume Space Sat 9/23 and one opening for Art Brut / The Spinto Band at Warsaw Wed 10/18. Saturdays in Brooklyn are always fun. Never been to Old Volume Space and can't find any info on the place, other than their address, 29 Wythe Avenue.

As for TL & Rx, they were great as usual and played a rather long set with maybe just a little too many new songs to keep the interest of the aformentioned sucky crowd.

Much thanks to Ryan for hooking me up with a tix for Beirut later on in the night. What a fantastic show. I was nervous going in that it wouldn't live up to one of my fav shows of the year so far, but it did. So much fun. I heart Beirut. They're doing two shows at Bowery Ballroom in November, but you already know that. And oh yeah, caught some of Get Him Eat Him too and liked what I heard. They kind of reminded me of Tapes & Tapes, sort of. Wouldn't mind seeing them again. No NYC dates listed at this time.

Bad News - Tonight @ The Annex

Just noticed on Aeroplane Pageant's Myspace that tonight's show at The Annex has been CANCELLED. Does this mean that just they won't be able to make it or that the whole thing has been nixed. I'm not sure, but I'm trying to find out. I'll update this post when I know more.

Update: Only Aeroplane Pageant are cancelling. Shitty. But Slowlands are taking their place, so...

Here's the word:

SHOW CANCELLED TONIGHT (8/24) AT THE ANNEX!!!!

Hi everyone,

So it looks like for reasons beyond our control tonight's show at The Annex will have to be cancelled. we were really looking forward to this one and by the sounds and looks of it, this was going to be a big one thanks to you all. Our good friends Slowlands will be taking the slot. Brian is just too sick and can barely even talk let alone sing, so send him you well wishes. Were gonna keep making the set bigger and better and get this record done in the next month and make a huge showing at this years CMJ festival in NYC. That's again for the support. There's new songs up on the site too. Well see you at the next show.

Love,

The Aeroplane Pageant

Soup and bed rest Brian, hope you feel better soon.

Gomez - Three Shows @ Bowery Ballroom

Gomez are taking over Bowery Ballroom for three shows in October. Tix go on sale tomorrow at noon. Maybe I'll finally make it one of their shows, after having missed them about a half dozen times. And I don't care what anyone says, In Our Gun is a great album. Here are the dates as links to the tix:

Thur Oct 5
Fri Oct 6
Sat Oct 7

Tix are $27.

According to their website, these shows are going to be unique:

New York X 3: Gomez at the Bowery Ballroom

As the band hurtles across the globe on a 23 hour flight to Australia, heavily sedated by whatever sleeping aids weren't confiscated in the security queue, we thought it we be a good time to announce a three-night stand in NYC!

Gomez will be performing three nights at New York City's venerable Bowery Ballroom -- October 5, 6 and 7. As we head towards the end of 2006, Gomez will be coming on ten years of performing together and so the time is nigh for a couple of throwdown gigs. These will be unique shows -- a deep immersion into the Gomez repertoire, additional musicians perhaps, and plenty of mayhem. In a couple weeks we'll be announcing a special West Coast event as well, so stay tuned.

We are offering a limited number of three-night tickets - a reduced price for all three nights - exclusively at
Gomez's online ticketing site. These tickets are available beginning tomorrow TUESDAY at noon EST. Individual show tickets go on sale to the public via TicketWeb beginning Wednesday, August 23 at 12 NOON EST.

We'll be announcing the rest of our fall tour -- both U.S. and U.K. dates -- over the next week. And if you're in Australia, tickets still remain for Gomez's third show in Melbourne, third show in Sydney and their Newcastle gig, but we expect them to sell out within the week.

CBGB - This Monday

Since Jen is away at Vermont for the weekend and Jason is out of the office, I'll help them out and let you know about this last minute show at CBGB this Monday, Aug 21.

Monday August 21
Productshopnyc & Gothamist present:
8pm - Tiny Masters
9pm - Slowlands
10pm - The Diggs

Doesn't look like there will be advance tix for this and I have no idea what the cost of admission will be. I'm gonna steal BV's words:

CBGB closes for good on September 30th. If you don't like punk rock or hardcore, and you're looking for an excuse to go one last (or first) time, [this] would be a good time to do it.

The Oranges Band

I have been listening to The Oranges Band's The World And Everything In It (Buy it) a lot recently and I realized that this is another album that deserved to be on my Best of '05 list. I love how this album feels new and old at the same time. The surf-indie-rock throwback poppiness instantaneously puts me in a good mood. Hell, even just looking at the album cover art puts me in a good mood. I hear that they put on a hell of a live show as well. Two NYC dates are listed at their Myspace, one of which is a Roman Kuebler solo performance at Knitting Factory with Charles Bissell of The Wrens.

Scrubs - Journey - You Tube

Crackers United's Journey You Tube post inspired me to see if my fav scene from my fav ep of Scrubs was on You Tube. And of cource, it was:

Scrubs - JD sings Journey

Some Thoughts From Today's Yankees Games

-Thanx Jonny.
-Abreu continues to shine in pinstripes.
-When are fools gonna learn to stop testing Melky's arm. And I love how almost every one of his 40 RBIs seem to have come in big-time clutch situations.
-Ponson is garbage. Kind of like the sox's bullpen.
-Is it asking too much to just occasionally pitch inside to Ramirez and Ortiz.
-I love hearing the "overrated" chant as Jeter hits a game winning single.
-Longest game in MLB history is the second game of a double header.
-Yanks back up 3 plus a 1/2 and on the way to a _ _ _ _ _.

Lets see if we can put Beckett a little closer to the top of the "most homeruns hit against a Boston pitcher in a season" list.

It's Only Been A Few Days...

..and already the lineup at CMJ.com has been altered.

In:

Cansei de Ser Sexy
The Annuals
Jucifer
David Bazan
The Fever
Girl Talk
Figurines

Missing:

The Boy Least Likely To
Holly Golightly
Anathallo
P.O.S.

Gets to be a lot harder to notice when the list is a mile long. Unless you have a band name like The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower and you mysterious disappear from the list a few days before the fest, like last year.

Forget Cassettes
Performed August 18, 2006

When we welcomed our favorite Nashville rockers back in for their 3rd session, it was almost exactly a year after the last time they played for us.

Here, they celebrate the recent release of their second full-length album "Salt" by playing 4 tracks that appear on the disc.

This set was made all the more remarkable as original band member Doni joined Beth, Jay, and Aaron in the Lounge to flesh out their sound by playing keyboards. For the time being, he is playing live dates with the band. They'll be making a lot of appearances through the remainder of this year to promote "Salt", so be sure to check them out if they come to your neck of the woods.

It's go time.

Thanx again to PTST for the heads up:

CMJ Music Marathon Sub Pop Showcase
Thurs Nov 2 - Bowery Ballroom

The Shins

The Album Leaf
Oxford Collapse
The Elected
Loney, Dear

I agree with Pat. This one is a must. What a dopetastic lineup.

At some point I will get around to making a list of all the announced showcases.

Reasons Why...

...you should go to Union Hall tomorrow:

- The Isles will be introducing their new record to the world so they will surely be in fine spirits and playing at the top of their game.

-
The Mugs will unleash their usual array of tasty sounds: the old Ludwig, a wooden snare, hand-picked cymbals, a '72 Rick, vintage Sunn, no guitar pedals on the Schecter, echo-box Rhodes, the Mesa stack, and two golden voices.

- This is a choice opportunity to check out Union Hall if you haven't been there yet. The performance space has low ceilings, strategic sound-dampening curtains, and a quality sound system. You'll feel the rock crisp and clear.

- Union Hall is only a block away from
Maria's - home of the best margarita in NYC.

Apparently, the bands are also guaranteeing satifaction.

Also, I've noticed that Union Hall now have a website, in addition to their Myspace.

ERMP This Sat - Lineup Change

Clogs out. Magik Markers in.

Due to the proverbial circumstances beyond our control, Clogs will no longer be able to play our August 19th show.

Taking their place on the bill will be Magik Markers, who are terrific folks for being willing to play on such short notice.

We'll have a description of their music up on ermp.org very soon. For the moment, the following links may prove informative:

The band's website: http://www.magikmarkers.com/
Dusted interview:
http://www.dustedmagazine.com/features/347
Live review: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/06/magik_markers_a.html

The updated lineup:
* MAGIK MARKERS
* EXCEPTER
* BLUES CONTROL
* FERN KNIGHT

"Doors" are at 1:30, first group at 2. As always, the show will be free.

No word on whether there will be a new flyer.

Virtual Tour - New Yankee Stadium

Update: Go here.

You've seen the virtual tour of the new Mets Stadium, now you can also check out the new Yankee Stadium. Currently, the only place I can find it is here, semi-hidden in the Yankees section of the Yes Network website, in the multimedia showcase at the bottom right corner. Soon it will most likely be moved here.

Ground was broken today. I feel sad-happy, which is weird.

Three One G/SAF CMJ Showcase

Panache shows another CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory:

11.04.06 Sat
New York City, New York. Knitting Factory (Three One G/SAF CMJ Showcase) w/ yip yip

Three One G sheds some more light on this showcase:

Nov. 4 New York, NY @ The Knitting Factory (Official Three One G CMJ Showcase) w/ The Chinese Stars, Das Oath, Some Girls

And SAF shows that Dmonstrations will be part of a CMJ showcase on Nov 4, so they will probably be a part of this showcase too.

Panache / Blueghost / Lovepump CMJ Showcase

The CMJ info digging begins. Here's some more info on that The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower / The Slits CMJ date at Knitting Factory:

CMJ Music Marathon 2006 Two-Floor Event: Panache / Blueghost / Lovepump Showcase with The Slits, Aids Wolf, The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, Genghis Tron, The Apes, Child Abuse, Made In Mexico, Dynasty Handbag, Green Milk From the Planet Orange (Japan), Shellshag, Rah Bras, The Mall

This info is also posted at Panache, which sheds some more light on the Nov 3 The Plot CMJ date:

11.03.06 Fri
Brooklyn, New York. www.toddpnyc.com (VENUE TBD) the slits w/ the apes, the plot, genghis tron, the mall and more!

So much for MSG.

Oxford Collapse - Cake Shop, New Album

First time I saw Oxford Collapse they were opening for Constantines at Mercury Lounge. I didn't really know what to make of them. Maybe they were thrashed or something, cause they seemed sloppy, but perhaps intentionally??? I dunno. As I've previously mentioned, the last time I saw them was opening for We Are Scientists at Maxwell's. I enjoyed the hell out of them this time around. The songs were tighter and more fun, the energy was more focused, and basically it just sounded great. This was the same night that WAS ended up playing so hard that they set a speaker on fire and the venue had to be evacuated. Awesome. Anyways, they have a new album coming out:

Check it out! We spent 10 whirlwind days at Headgear Studios in Brooklyn with the bubbly and competent John Agnello, and the record is DONE. It’s set for an October 10th release on Sub Pop CD and LP and it’s called Remember the Night Parties. 11 songs, all brand new!

And a new NYC date at Cake Shop via OMR:

Sat 9/09 8:00 PM Cake Shop
The Victoria Lucas, Christy & Emily,
Oxford Collapse, Centipede D'Est

Now that they are getting back to playing live, look for them to be playing every other day at every venue in NYC.

Speaking of Contantines, watch their new video for Working Full-time at Sub Pop.

Chris Russo Is Now A Yankee Fan

Today's Mike & the Mad Dog radio show, minus Mike, who is on vacation, was one of the best ever. Russo, a rabid Yankee hater, started the show by declaring that he is now a Yankee fan. On the YES simulcast, you could see him wearing a Yankee winter hat. It was beyond ridiculous. If anyone comes across a screen shot of him wearing that hat, please send it my way.

Earlimart News

The news:

Earlimart have released a new limited edition 7" vinyl on Suicide Squeeze. It has two tracks, including:

"Answers & Questions" -- this track is a preview track from the upcoming untitled album, due early 2007> this is an different version than the finished album track.

"Caruthers Boy" -- This is an exclusive track for Suicide Squeeze which is on the 7" and the 10 year anniversary comp they just released.

The band has been recording the upcoming full-length for the past couple months on their own dime at their own Ship studios in Eagle Rock CA.

An mp3:

Answers & Questions

Buy the 7" at Insound or from Suicide Squeeze.

The North Atlantic

Lovin' the goodies in the mail. Here's the latest. The North Atlantic. Remind me a little bit of Sparta, older Weezer (sort of), Hundred Reasons, and Brand New, all bands which I treasure. Allmusic thinks they are a bit like The Dismemberment Plan and I hear that too. I dig it. Here's two mp3s:

Scientist Girl

Drunk Under Electrics

You can also listen to/download these two songs and one more song at their Myspace. Here's what the press release says:

The North Atlantic have had a busy summer. The San Diego band have only just released their full length, Wires in The Walls [East/West, We Put Out Records], and already they have been coast to coast with little sign of slowing down. Already dubbed the "loudest band in indie punk" The North Atlantic traffics in a noisy, energetic set that features Jason Hendrix's drunkenly literate character studies and healthy portions of sonic embellishment and texture. Their spastic live show is not to be missed.

Speaking of live shows, they were just here in NYC recently for three, including a record release party at Sin-e, none of which I was at. Good thing they are coming back sooner than later:

Sun 10.01 Brooklyn, NY - North Six w/ Wax on Radio
Tues 10.03 Hoboken, NJ - Maxwell's w/ Wax on Radio

Some News From The Most Serene Republic

They're in the studio:

Here's a little update from camp Serene:

It's been almost two months now since we have been on the road. We took some time off in June for ourselves to relax and live somewhat of a normal life. As soon as July came around we went back into the studio to begin writing the new album, as well as recording some demos. So far we are really excited with the material that has been coming out of the sessions, and hopefully by the mid/end of August we will begin recording the final tracks for the album. When we get a chance we will upload some photos from the studio for you all to see. We would also like to send out a thank you to everyone who is been picking up Phages online at GalleryAC.com.

Phages indeed. Buy it.

Silversun Pickups - Download WOXY Lounge Act

Sadly, I was unable to attend either of Silversun Pickups' recent NYC shows (it hurt), but I was able to listen to their WOXY lounge act today, which was one of the best I've ever heard. They f'in shreaded. I'm still not completely in love with Carnavas (we're still dating), but the songs off of Carnavas that they played today sounded immense and (imho) far better than they sound on the album. They better come back again for CMJ this year (their performance at The Fader House was one of my favs last year), because I need to hear more of Carnavas played live. Here's the info about today's lounge act via WOXY:

Silversun Pickups
Performed August 9, 2006
Photo Gallery

We've been looking forward to having the Silversun Pickups in the Lounge since we first heard the "Pikul" EP. "Kissing Families" certainly became a staple of the WOXY.COM airwaves within a short period of time and remains a heavily requested tune.

This 4-piece from Los Angeles have been friends for years and just put out their debut full-length album called "Carnavas" on Dangerbird Records.

We caught the band on a day off while they were on their way to the Midwest Music Summit in Indianapolis. They played 4 tracks off the new album and also included "Kissing Families" into their set.

Track Listing:
Well Thought Out Twinkles
Rusted Wheel
- interview -
Future Foe Scenarios
Kissing Families
Lazy Eye

While on the subject of WOXY lounge acts, another band has popped up on the schedule that has been getting buzz recently and are part of this month's Friction:

8/25 The Foundry Field Recordings 4:00pm

...and don't forget about Forget Cassettes' lounge act on Fri Aug 18.

Thom Yorke - XFM Session

Exciting news @ Atease today:

Thom Yorke will be doing a session and an interview on Xfm on August 22nd. The show 'Xposure with John Kennedy' starts at 22:00 hrs.

So if that's 10:00PM UK time, then it's 5:00pm EST. You can listen online at the link above.

I'm all about any opportunity to hear more live versions of songs off of The Eraser, which is my fav album of 2006 so far. The Henry Rollins Sessions were superb and I want more! In fact, I (and I'm sure many, many others) want a solo tour bad. I wonder if there is an online petition floating around somewhere on the net. If there isn't, there should be.

Lollapalooza AT&T Blue Room

After fighting with my WMP for a half hour and restarting my comp a few times, I've finally got the thing working. The fight was worth it because their coverage of Editors has been fantastic. I haven't been that into Editors, but between this set and their exceptional WOXY lounge act, I think that is changing. I haven't seen Editors live yet and now I really want to. CMJ perhaps? Yankees - Sweep Toronto, Good Job Cashman

You can now officially consider the Toronto Blue Jays out of the race for the AL East Division Title. Yankees sweep the Jays while out scoring them 20-4. With the win today the Yanks go 5-1 for the home stand, win 8 of their last 9 games, and pull into a tie for the lead in the Eastern Division with the sox. The storyline for the next few weeks = Can the sox continue to pull last minute wins out of their arse now that they too are feeling the sting of injuries?

The Yanks are blazing right now and it's just a matter of days before we get Cano back and a maybe less than a month before we get Matsui back. The pitching staff has been steady. Cashman looks like a genius for not trading Wang, who looks like he is learning a lot from Mussina, as far as playing his position goes. Speaking of Cashman, Lidle pitches 7 today and only gives up one run and Wilson and Abreu both get big RBIs.

I just hope that Torre continues to find a way to put Melky "Melkman" Cabrera and Bernie Williams in the lineup.

Also, Jeter (MVP) extends hit streak to 12 games, Giambi continues to crush the ball and now has 31 homeruns, and it looks like A-Rod is working his way out of his slump.

Can you tell I'm excited?

Thievery Corporation - Webster Hall

Thievery Corporation's The Cosmic Game just squeaked into my favorite albums of 2005. In retrospect, it probably deserved to be higher on the list. I've been patiently waiting for NYC dates and to the best of my knowledge, they have not been to NYC in a while. Well here they come. Two shows at Webster Hall. Here's info about these shows via their Myspace:

Thievery Corporation announces NYC shows!

Thievery Corporation is happy to announce their only NYC live shows of 2006! The shows are Sept. 24th and 25th at Webster Hall in New York City. Just for you, our fans, there is a pre-sale that begins TODAY, August 2nd at 12 noon EST so that you can get your tickets prior to the public on sale date of Saturday, August 5th. These shows will be with Thieverys full band of percussionists, sitar, horns, and a myriad of vocalists.

The password is: versions

"Myriad of vocalists". I wonder if that implies surprise guests. Byrne? Coyne?

Forget Cassettes - WOXY Lounge Act

Forget Cassettes are returning to the WOXY lounge on Fri Aug 18 at 3:00PM for one of the station's infamous "Happy Hour" sessions. The date isn't on WOXY's website yet, but it is on the bands, who's last WOXY Lounge Act was epic and was comprised entirely of songs that they were working on for their new album, Salt. Download or stream their last lounge act here.

Speaking of Salt, another new track for the album has been posted to their Myspace and their website. "Lonely Does It" is vintage FC and is just as good as the first single off of Salt, "The Catch". Based on these two songs alone, I have a feeling that this album will be contending for a spot in the top ten of my Best Albums of 2006 list. The album is available for preorder here. Or you can just wait until it is instores a week from now, Tues Aug 8th.

The Shins - New Website

I like it.

Also, some news:

Long time no see! First of all, from all of us in the band, a sincere and very overdue "THANK YOU ALL!!!". You are definitely the most patient and loyal fans that any band has ever been granted. Its not just anyone that can get away with a three year wait between second and third albums, Trust us when we say we know how lucky we are because of you all. Once more-thank you for your patience.

A few things.

Big thanks to James Hall, the new Svengali of shins.com. He's a spunky little monkey that is seriously getting the job done. (And no, its not just cause he's an Albuquerque boy like we are. He's got book smarts too!)

A BIG TIME apology going out to everyone that bought tickets to Reading/Leeds to see us. No excuse could make up for this disappointment on both of our ends. We were so psyched to play this show at this legendary festival, but it came down to a rushed performance agreement conflicting with a major, and un-move able recording time period. We had to opt for the move that would get this record out on time. To our UK fans, we'll make up for this as soon as possible.

Speaking of the record, it gives us great pleasure to say that it is just weeks from being done! We can't leak any details, but we have never been more happy with anything that we've ever recorded before. And we can definitely say that it is due to the fact that we've been given so much time to perfect it. The record is the best we've ever done. We hope that you will agree. Stay tuned to shins.com for updates!

We'll be playing shows everywhere from San Diego to Williamsburg these next couple of months (yeah-most of these are festivals, sorry) but we predict a normal US tour of regular venues occurring this Fall. We hope to see you then. We've missed you very much.

love, the shins.

So, a Fall tour and almost finished with LP #3. Got it. And if the new website is too fancy for you, don't forget about their Myspace.
